My 3 yo GSD came out of a stint in boarding kennels with a really itchy trunk, around his front legs and under his armpits. The vet diagnosed pyoderma (probably due to contact with an irritant) and put him on a 2 week course of Synudol as well as a couple of injections. This doesn't seem to have worked and I'm reluctant to give him any more antibiotics, it seems superficial and his infection has definatly cleared up but he's scartching at it and making hit red and a bit sore. I have been washing him with anti bacterial shampoo and he is now on Wendals Stop Itch herbal supplement which have eased the symptoms a little, what else can I do? He gets his flea and tick spot ons every four weeks and is cuttently wormed with drontal plus every three months. I just want to ease the itching for him...

Plus, I got a new rescue dog last week and they get on amazingly well, apart from a fight the other night when my GSD got too close to the lurchers food bowl and they rally kicked off. I am giving the lurcher time to settle in before i tackle the problem and they are fed seperatly at the moment but the have given each other a coule of scratches. The lurcher has a small skin puncture (you can see the flesh, which is intact), I cleaned it with antiseptic wipes and have been applying savlon but he keeps licking the scap off, what can I do to get him to leave it alone? The GSD seems to have had a patch of hair pulled out and it's left the skin red and yellow. I cleaned this up too and put some savlon on, it doesn't seem to bother him to much but he does keep licking at it... any ideas on helping it heal?

God, I sound like a terrible dog owner.... I'm not by the way!

Sulphur powder (Flowers of Sulphur) is wonderful for any rashes or infections on the skin of dogs. It is really cheap to buy but you may have to order it from a Pharmacy as it is an "old-fashioned" remedy! If the dog licks it off the skin, no harm will come to the dog as it is a blood purifier too. Has anyone else used it?

I've put a block of Rock Sulphur (available from petshops!) in the dogs' drinking water and it certainly helps.
