Topic Dog Boards / General / Yorkie puppy length and height

Hello,

Is there a way to predict how big (length/height) a Yorkie puppy will be? And, when will he stop growing?

I have found a lot of information on weight but nothing on height/length. Size always refers to weight, but is there a correlation between height/length and weight? In my opinion size is a combination of both. The breed standards are too general and don’t explain anything.

My five months old Yorkie weighs around 2 pounds and 14 ounces, and is about 8-8.5 inches from neck to tail and from head to toe. He eats very very little (I still force feed baby food). He looks very good and compact. But, if he continues to grow longer, and continues to be a fussy eater, he’ll be very thin looking.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thank you

Nazi

Hi Nazi, I have a yorkie as well. I don't know about the length/height info that you want, but my yorkie is also a very very picky eater. She doesn't eat alot as well. It gets worrysome at times, but the vet said she is okay. I decided to keep her food down all the time. She eats such a little bit at a time, that this has helped. She is 8 1/2 months old and weights 4 pounds. I was told that yorkies are full grown at 6 months of age. I don't know if that is true or not, but my yorkie pretty much stopped growing then. Sorry I can't be of more help. Shirl :D

Nazi,
have you had him chcked by your vet?
Having to force feed a dog this way isn't natural :(
What do you feed him, he really needs to having a nutritionally complete diet if he is to grow and develop.

Yes. The vet seems to think that he is ok.

He eats Cesar dog food mixed with Ukanuba dry food--when behaving nicely :) If he refuses to eat I force feed Gerber baby food--Beef in Beef Broth.

I have been told to let him go hungry until he eats on his own, but he is tiny, and I don't want to harm him. And, his meal portions aren't large enough to carry him a long time. He eats around one tablespoon of food.

He loves treats--I am sure he would eat all day, if food tasted like his treats.

Hello Shirl,

Thank you for the info.

I have dry food available at all times too, but he doesn't eat it. He likes treats, which I keep to the minimum.

I have also heard that Yorkies are full grown by six months, so he might stay as he is right now--which is not thin at all.

His weight fluctuates between 2 pounds and 9 ounces to 2 pounds and 14 ounces. The vet I am seeing doesn't think much of it. I think I should find a vet who specializes in small dogs. Technically he hasn't gained any weight for about 3 weeks now. I only force feed one tablespoon of baby food per feeding--he vomits anything more--so his food may not be enough--nutritional wise. He does eat Cesar dog food mixed with dry food--but not all the time. But, then again, Gerber baby food is what human babies eat--of course in larger amounts--so it can't be bad!

I need to fix him soon, so I have to be sure that he is strong enough.

One more questions:

Does yours (or did at six months) sleep alot?

He likes to be near me sleeping rather than playing. He plays only when I play with him!

Nazi, personally I wouldn't force feed him at all, but that is my opinion. I know your worried, but he WILL eat when he is hungry. You sure do have a little guy. You have to remember he has a little tummy as well. When I was so worried about Precious eating, my husband kept telling me, she has a little tummy she can't hold alot of food.
Yes, Precious sleeps alot. She sleeps off and on almost all day. Come late afternoon she is ready to have her dinner and play. I wouldn't worry, unless you think it is too excessive, then take him to the vet and have him checked out real good, blood test, etc. Changing vets may be a good idea if your not happy with the one you have.
Your fortunate that you Yorkie likes treats. Mine doesn't. She is not treat oriented, so that makes it difficult to train her. If he likes the taste of his treats, then maybe you could find a food that is similiar. Everyone has their own opinion about getting their dogs to eat. But I tried her on many foods until I found one she would eat. Plus I give her cooked beef or chicken with her dinner.
I even tried the Raw diet with her, she loved it at first, then wouldn't eat any of it. She prefers cooked meat.
Hope I have helped, sorry if I didn't. I'm not an expert by no means. Shirl :D
