I have a 10 week old Schnauzer and I want to clean his ears and clip his nails, any how to tips?

Hi, I don't clip the nails. I bought some clippers when Oscar was a puppy (now nearly 6 months) read up on it and then completely bottled out. Kept having visions of blood gushing everywhere and a dog running around in pain. So gave that a miss and now the groomer does it. (For sale, nail clippers, one careful owner). As for the ears, tried plucking, um not much better there, bottled out again and now the groomer does it. However, what I can do is use some lubricated ear pads (most good pet stores sell them) and I gently clean the inside of the ear twice a week and make sure that there is no wax or dirt in them. Sticking to what I am good at works for me.

My Mini Schnauzer is 6 months and I too tend to rely on the groomer for nail clipping and ear plucking (she goes once every two months). I do occassionally pull a few hairs from the inner ear, just to keep her used to it. Like Scattergood, the idea of nail clipping really worries me !!

If the nail is white u can see the quick, if not I usually put the clipper on the nail and take a little off at a time. I clip their nails once a week and they are real short. I'm planning on getting a dremel (little hand held one) tool for doing their nails. They work like a charm.

Just do a little at a time and u will know how short u can go, and always keep a steptic pen on hand. I just got the ones in the razor isle for shaving looks like a crayon and it works great (I have never clipped my dogs) its good to have on hand just in case. I usually put the black nail threw the clipper (giloteen one sp) and put the handle against the pad and clip, this way I have never clipped a quick yet. Hope that made sense.
