Hi everyone. I've been reading this board for a while and decided it was time to join. You all seem to offer so much info and support so I thought I'd post a question that I'm sure has been asked many times but thought maybe someone could help me.
I have a 2 1/2 y/o male keeshond and a 1 1/2 y/o female keeshond. She will be coming into her 3rd heat and I'm worried that they won't breed. Last time she was in heat, my male was interested and tried, but it was always in the wrong places...i.e. head, side, everywhere but where he should have been. Throughout the whole time (day 7 to day 26) we tried to get them together but he was always confused as to what to do. If we held her, she would either sit, try turning around to see what he was doing or he would pull away from us and fight us. As I said, we tried almost every single day so I don't know what went wrong. We tried leaving them alone together, separating them then getting them back together, but nothing. Any ideas on what to do? I don't have any experienced breeders around this area so I can't ask for help there and my vet just said "well, some males are just stupid when it comes to this".
Can someone please help? Surely there's someone here that can give me an idea to help these two get together.
Thanks for any and all help!!!!
Hi lita
Welcome to the board, I'm afraid I know very little about breeding, so can't help you there; but I'm sure those with experience will be along to help. Although may I say the subject of breeding can get a little heated, but generaly people have the dogs best interests at heart.

Thanks Liberty,
I too only have my dogs best interest at heart. They've been tested for everything and are all caught up on their shots. They are like our babies and we're very gentle with them. The minute our male pulls away from us when we're trying to help them, we let him go. It's not like we're forcing him or anything. He just doesn't understand what it is he is supposed to do and he gets so frustrated. I feel bad for him. Hopefully someone here can help.
If your boy is pulling away from you, then it may well be that he is one of the type of dogs that likes to do thing his way!! :-D
What I would try and it is very difficult to explain this in a post. Is to guide the bitch to the dog, by that I mean have someone on her head with a good collar to grip on to, bearing in mind that at the point of penetration she may well be inclined to try and bite. You position yourself at her side with your hand underneath her between her legs, holding her vulva between two fingers, when the dog has finally found the right place, and in some maidens it takes them a while as he mounts her, back her very gently towards him, if he fails encourage him with your voice to try again. He will eventually find the right end I promise.:-D

hi lita....the best thing is get a progesterone test after she has been in heat a week there is no other way to tell when she will be ready, most of my dogs don't even ovulate until day fourteen.then you still need two days for the eggs to divide before they can be fertilized.....its just a waste of time to do it any other way.once you know they have ovulated you only need one breeding ,to spend all that time trying and get nothing its worth the cost of the tests......
