Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ticks! :-(

Hi

Yesterday we took our girls to a friends who lives on a farm, they had a wonderful time running through the fields, but when we got home we noticed they had a couple of ticks :-( any suggestions on how to remove them safely, I do have young pups at home and don't want them passed on, I've heard you have to be careful to remove the heads of the tick because if they are left they can cause infection. Is this something I can remove or am I better off seeing my vet??

Thanks

hi i think i heard somewhere that you can cover the tick with vasaline so they cant breath then they die and just drop off ......ive never tried this myself but ive heard it does work ...... hope this helps ......... Ann xx

Thank you very much about the vaseline tip it really does work. I smothered it over the tick on my fidgety 8 month old Golden Retriever about 3 times in one day it went black and then disappeared so I then worried that a part of it had been left in but when I cleaned the floor I found the tick. Years ago I remember when we had a tick problem we struck a match and dabbed the end of the match on the tick and it let go but I much prefer the vaseline as its much safer.

Hi,
At the vet you should be able to buy a 'tick hook' - a little plastic job that hooks under the tick's body and you 'unscrew' it form the dog. I've seen them used and they are brilliant - you know you've got the whole tick off, head out and all, and they're still alive and moving  !
I always forget whether you twist clockwise or anticlockwise....one way works, the other doesn't.

uuurgh - disgusting - i hate ticks.

They work fantastic soopadooper!!

Sorry, excited there. Those little plastic widgets make life so much easier than cotton wool and Vodka or Rum (gets the little devils pixxxd & they lose their grip).

Put hook round tick, twist anticlockwise twice and lo, off falls the alive, kicking and very disgusting tick.

You can then have the pleasure of watching it drown or whatever is you preferred method of destruction!!

There is a small amount of pleasure to be had watching the legs kicking (particulary if there is a little sterilising fluid in the water), unless of course you are then sick in to the water at the thought of it sitting on your dog!!!!:O

Sorry horrid sense of humour

:D @ Julia

Now you're talking! When you said "drowning" you didn't mention "torture" aswell :D :D

vodka and the rum would be for me to deal with task in hand.
advising partner from a distance (probably another county), in the removal of the ticks.
