Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Protein content - dry vs moist??
- By Jo19 [gb] Date 10.06.03 13:29 UTC
Definitive answer please!

Can any Champdogger "do the science bit" and clarify whether moist complete dog food contains the same/more protein per typical feed than dry complete?? I've read with interest a number of posts on the site debating the issue - but I'm still slightly confused. Am I right in thinking that, per typical meal, moist food actually provides more protein (despite the fact that, per 100grms, dry food appears to)?

Thanks

Jo

Edited to add: To provide a working example you could consider Eukanuba (26% protein/8% moisture and Naturediet - 12% protein/75% moisture).

Technically, in maths you cannot have a percentage of a percentage. But this cropped up in another post and if you like to work it by converting it back into weight you will find there is very little difference. High roughly equal to high and low, low. Remembering of course that you will need more by weight of the moist because of the water content which would need to be given seperatly as water with the dry. (If you follow my drift!)

Best wishes, John

What you need to do is reduce both to dry matter. Divide the protein by the dry matter eg 26 divided by 92 x 100 =28.26 and 12 divided by 25 x 100 = 48.

Now typically you would feed 200g of dry food, and likely 500g of moist complete (or 300g with equal volume mixer, shich is about 150g). In the first example you would be feeding 52gramnmes of protein, and in the second 60grammes.
