Hello,

I am considering investing in a new dog. I have never owned a dog before but my sister has had many. As I have explored some of my options I have come across the Norwegian Buhnund and am very interested in this breed for numerous reasons. I would be grateful if you could give me some information. First, do you have any Internet sites that could tell me more about this type of dog? Second, since I would be thinking of purchasing a male puppy, what would be the cost and the availability. Third, as a beginning dog owner (at the age of 57) would you recommend this dog for a person who lives in the city (Toronto). Also, I am a Catholic priest, I live in a house with other priests and I have lots of people coming and going from the house including children, how would the this breed deal with that? I hope my questions are clear and make sense to you. I am just in the process of exploring my options but I love the look of the Buhund and I am intrigued by its description. I would be most grateful for whatever information you could provide me with that would help me make a decision. Thank you.

I am not sure if the Buhund is in the USA in any number, in the UK there are fewer than 50 bred a year. You may find you will have to look at similar breeds, like the Norwegian Elkhound, and some other medium sixzed Spitz breeds, though a lot of them have more coat than these two breeds.

Contact the AKC for details. If you put Anerican Kennel Club in a search engine you should get their very comprehensive site. This site is UK based.

I can give you the email address for a lady who breeds Buhunds in the UK, she is quite an authority on the breed. she may well know of the US/Canadian position, and certainly will be able to give you plenty of information.

Click on my name, and my email address is in my profile.
