Not sure where to stick this so put it here.

Do any of you have experience of DNA testing? What so of costs are involved?

Is it something the general vet does at the practice?

Thanks Pam

Hi Pam,

Depends what you need the DNA test for! The AHT at newmarket will send you a kit, and I think the testing is between £15 - £20 per dog. I think (but could well be wrong) that this is the cheek swab test, and you do it yourself adn send it (or them) back to the AHT. When we were collecting samples for the DNA research project in Am. Cockers into Hereditary Ctaract we got small phials from the AHT for the blood samples, and our Vets took the samples which were sealed, labelled and sent back to the AHT. Hope this helps.

I know the KC are doing a DNA id thing at the moment, and I have a feeling it is currently free, but there is some sort of requirement that after testing andidentification the sample becomes/remains KC property.

bye

Hi Pam

It depends what it is for.

vWD in Dobe's for instance is done by cheek (buccal) swab using a small brush by the owner. We currently pay 90 Euros for this - if anyone wants their Dobe tested then please contact me and I will point you in the right direction as someone else is currently doing the clinics - more news on this to follow soon (I hope)
