I have two westies who now both have bad itching hairloss and redness one started 5yrs ago the other about 6 months ago, had endless vet visits allergy testing in 1st dog drugs shampoos you name it, have changed to Burns food two weeks ago, 1st dog said to be allergic to wool, house dust mite and clover I have asked about mange/mites and they did the sellotape test which was negative but I believe that any mite would not have been seen easily they automatically think westie..allergy. My 2nd dog in the last day has rubbed/lost the hair all around one eye now and is obviously in distress, I cannot understand two dogs the same although they are aunt and nephew my mother in law has my dogs sister and niece and the breeder we got them from has no trouble with their dogs, at one point we thought we would lose the 1st dog she was so ill it has all been very hard work trying to keep the problem under control both look really bad all over they have no treats but no supplements either would that be worth trying? any advice please, Deni
I recently got had a sprocker pup that had scabies, i actually hand raised the litter, but we never noticed that there was a problem until the pups went to their new homes the vet thinks this was probably due to them going from a kennel into homes with central heating so creating a warmer environment for the pups to breed. Before we had our pup check by my own vet he had chronic diahoerria which cleared up after he was treated for the scabies, the diahoerria was due to stress because of the scabies, jack was treated with stronghold, as were our other two dogs and the cats just in case, a month later he was retreated and touch wood it has never reoccurred, if your dogs havent been treated with stronghold ask for them to be treated with it, no other treatment kills mites.
Jack was also put on antibiotics which cleared up the itching and hair loss. the itching stopped in a week and his hair grew back very quickly.
the hair loss was very quick which was why we didnt realise there was a problem until it was to late hope this helps

Thanks for your reply I am going to make another appointment with the vet and mention the stronghold he did respond to antibiotics last time but was not as bad as he is now I hope they will consider this, both dogs have actually been seen by a skin expert who felt he let us down because nothing sorted the problem shampooing seems to inflame the skin, Bob Grass herbal cream calms the skin but the underlying cause needs to be found. By the way have you heard of flowers of sulphur this was recommended a few weeks ago by a work colleague
