presumably you are referring do demodectic? There are several schools of thought on this, don't jump in & blame the breeder its quite poss your pups dam had it as a pup before the breeder got her & by 8 or 10 weeks had disappeared so the breeder of your pup may have had no idea it was being carried. Just a thought!

If it is demodectic mange, I belive it is present on most dogs but in small numbers and does not often cause trouble, as it is controled by the dogs immune system. It is seen on puppies though, particularly short haired dogs and it is usualy on the face and front legs, transfered from the dame when feeding.
One of my puppies had it, it became evident at about 7 months and took two to three months to clear, I was warned he may have further outbrakes but he didn't.
As most dogs have the mite you can't blame the breeder unless they knew that the particular line suffers from immunodeficiency, in which case it would be wiser not to breed from that line. It follows that it would also be better if you did not breed from your dog as it could pass on the surseptability to the infection.
Sorry about the spelling. JH

That is what i have read, it isn't the mange that is inherited, but the immune problem that allows the mites present in most dogs to become a problem. I was told by a vet that the particular breeding should not be repeated, as it is likely to be how the two parent lines click that produced the problem, unless of course either parent has produced this problem in other litters. If it is sarcoptic Mange, then that is a straight aquired problem like fleas, and has nothing to do with the breeding.

'Stronghold' (available from your vet) is an excellent treatment for mites and really easy to apply, it's a spot on treatment that you apply to the back of the dog's neck once a month. It will also prevent fleas and worms.

I had heard that Stronghold would help with Sarcoptic mange, often caught from foxes, Cheyletielloses, Harvest Mite and ticks, as they walk about the skin surface. But does it deal with Demodex & Ear Mite? If so it will be a blessing. JH

I have read in a book written by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier specialist that application of Quellada works. This can be purchased from the chemist as it is a prepreparation for humans. Don't know whether this will help.
