thanks...no Im not considering one...but a local traveller has "aqquired" two & has them at the back of his caravan & the Parish council asked me to find out a bit about their reqirements and to the legality to all of this. Those who may recall previous postings I made about very neglected samoyeds/newfy will be interested to know that this is the same person!!!!

:eek: Would the general rules about animal welfare not allow something to be done Sam?

Sam,

I found this that might be useful -

Licences are required for any animal which appears on a schedule to the Act. These are issued by the relevant local authority, and will only be granted when the authority is satisfied that it would not be contrary to public interest on the grounds of safety or nuisance; that the applicant is a suitable person; and the animal's accommodation is adequate and secure.

Where the local authority grant a licence it shall impose conditions on the licence covering issues such as:

1. a requirement that the animal be kept only by a person or persons named on the licence;

2. restrictions on the movement of the animal from the premises as specified on the licence;

3. a requirement that the licence holder has a current insurance policy which ensures both licence holders and others against any liability caused by the animal.

The Act does not apply to any dangerous wild animal kept in a zoo; circus; pet shop; or registered scientific establishment. These premises are registered under their own specific legislation. (See also the Zoo Licensing Act 1981).

The Ostrich is named as a DWA and so the above applies.

Fiona

The garden centre opposite us has Ostriches surrounded by high, solid fences and people are warned to be careful.

I've never been on the end of an angry ostrich but I gather they can be quite nasty. A friend has some Rheas and they were bad enough!! When she got them she looked into licencing and whilst Rheas were OK, Ostriches needed one.

Can't you arrange to have them kidnapped, like Shergar. Once they are burgered no one can tell the difference!!!! :)

The travellers caravans round here are usually pulled by the standard black and white cob :)
