Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / My bitch sits when mating
- By ekholyn [au] Date 24.05.03 03:10 UTC
I have a 2 1/2 year old female Australian Cattle dog. She is on her 14 day of heat period. She has been with the Male for 3 days. She has started to stand, tail to the side, allowing him to mate. As he starts to do his job she screams and sits. Can anyone help in trying to get them to tie properly. I have heard that you can hold the bitch and assist them. The male is almost 4 and has one other unsucessful attempt with another bitch previous. My bitch is interested but I think she is scared. (like me).

This is quite a common thing in maiden btches. Has she been checked for a stricture. If all is clear (you can check with a lubricated clean finger that there is no obstruction) then holoding the butch under the tummy and by the collar at the critical mownt, and quietly reassuring her will help, especially as the dog is also inexperienced.

It could also mean she is not quite ready. I have been in this situation, amd ended up with slip matings, so am trying again this coming season.

Sometimes getting dogs mated is not as easy as it may seem.

There is no obstruction and yes it looks like a slip, I will keep trying upto her 16th day as advised by the aca in case she is a late oncomer. Hopefully she will take, we will try holding her as she is madly in love with her mate. Thanks again.
