Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / paper training - so to speak
- By guest [us] Date 23.05.03 22:30 UTC
This question has already been asked once and I got a little more of a response from Woodle83 than I wanted or expected. In response to his or her answer, I would like to say, you know absolutely nothing about me or my husband and to say that we are being cruel because we want to breed our dogs is ludicrous. I didn't say that I was so new to the rottweiler world that I went out and bought 4 dogs just so I could breed them and make money. I have had three of these dogs for over a year (having gotten them when they were puppies) and rescued the 4th one from living a life on a car chain wrapped around her neck with no one to give her any love and affection, and we do love and appreciate each and every one of them. My question was about paper training them in their pen and no I did not mean I wanted to put newspaper down (that, in itself is totally a stupid thing to say). At any rate, if someone else sees this, I would appreciate a more educated answer to the question at hand. How do I break my dogs from soiling their kennels? The person I got them from has always put sheets down in their kennels from the time they are born so they could go on the sheets and she could just take the sheet up and have a clean kennel. This is what is causing the problem. They don't know any better than to go in their kennel. I've had dogs all my life and never had any trouble training them but I'm at a loss now. Can someone please give me some advice?

I'm sorry if we're all at cross-purposes guest.
Why don't you register with us so we can be clear what it is you want help/advice about? I don't understand what you mean about paper-training - to me paper-training means putting down newspaper so that dogs learn to pee/poo on that instead of on the floor. Is that what you mean?
Can you describe the kennels? Do you mean you want the dogs to learn to 'go' in the run rather than the inside portion of the kennel? I'm afraid that to train a dog to use one particular place for their toilet takes a lot of time, effort and concentration from the owner - and takes weeks with just one puppy. Trying to do it with 4 adult dogs at the same time is, I think, not worth attempting.
To make clearing up easier, why not try putting down woodshavings?
Hope this helps.
:)

hi,
the reason i got angry was because it sounded like you just wanted them to make money. I know that to breed from most bitches (excuse spelling) if wrong, they need to be hip scored and this is best done when they are 2, due to the bitch or dog being mature, i.e their bones are fully developed. I know people that have used their animal to breed and it was horrible, so i get angry about it. I am sorry that i have affended you and i 'm very glad that you rescued the one that was left unloved. I have never heard of sheets being put into a kennel. i agree that woodshavings may help, but may affect sensitive eyes. My friend uses gravel and another uses cat litter so that its easier to pick up. Again i'm very sorry that i 've hurt your feelings, hope all goes well.
