A lady has contacted me she is in some distress she has a Lab with Hip Dysplacia and she also has a skin problem she has been insured since birth firstly with kennel club then she says it changed to pet protect isnt that still the kennel club one? Anyway now the insurance company are saying to insure her again this year will be from £19 to £75 a month !!!! because of her age she is Four,What do others thinkn about this My opnion is unprintable ! how can they justify that premium?
- By Carla Date 21.05.03 14:24 UTC
Hi

They are obviously trying to discourage her from insuring with them :(
- By mattie [gb] Date 21.05.03 14:34 UTC
Is it legal though?
- By Carla Date 21.05.03 14:37 UTC
I would say so... they are pretty much allowed to quote what they like :( She could try writing to the chairman, which is what I would do, explaining they can't have it all their own way and that they have to take the rough with the smooth - but whether or not it would work I don't know...

I must admit this sounds although they can do what they want ! I am with them for Moose and MB and they do not give discount for insuring two and MB who is a year younger than Moose is about £4 more expensive. Have got to stay with them as paid for the whole year !

Why not suggest her contacting the insurance Ombudsman maybe to see if there is anything she can do ?

I was with a company called Vet Select and each year you got a voucher back to cover the yearly vaccination.
I was paying £22.00 per month. Have just had my renewal notice and no longer Vet Select now Pet Protect and no voucher for vaccination included in renewal policy :-(.
Any way all morning have been shopping around and Lloyds TSB do a policy. Bearing in mind it is a Dogue de Bordeaux I have they insure all breeds the same regardless. So my new monthly premium is £9.86. Majority of benefits the same.
The renewal premium with Pet Protect was £21.00!!!
Vet fee cover withPet Protect was £6000.00 Lloyds £3000.00 this being the only real difference. If a dog needed £6000.00 of treatment in any one go then must be in a really bad way and ........ you know what I mean, is the vet tratment really in the dogs interests or the vets??? :-( sounds horrible but we do know that can sometimes be the case :-(

I was with Vet Select. No longer. £14 a month and £250 excess for my youngster and £26 a month and £60 excess for the oldest (3 years). I've gone with Saga £21 for the two with just £35 excess. Ah the benefits of being over 50.

Hi gibbsy

I was trying to forget that I've just reached the big 50,:D .....But I've just done an online quote with Saga for 2 of my 3, (they are all with Pet Plan currently)

I see I also could get the 2 youngsters insured for the same as you: I'm paying £36 a month between them with Pet Plan. The oldie would have to stay with Pet Plan, as she's 13 and has ongoing Vivitonin. But I also pay £22 a month for just her AND I have to pay the first £80 every year then 20% of the rest!
The only thing I couldn't get off the Saga site was, do you pay the excess every year for an on-going condition, like Pet Plan, or do you pay once and then thats it? And do they pay for dental treatment to allieviate pain? Cavaliers are well known for having their teeth fall out at an early age, ...well, mine have anyway!!(Not just scale n polish, obviously)

Thanks
Sami

Im with saga too for mine and its the same very reasonable price excess £35 and they never quibble
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.05.03 19:18 UTC
Just had the renewal from Pinnacle, and it has gone up by £8 a year to £120 a year.

Hi mattie, can you answer the query I put to gibbsy , above, then please? Is the cover, eg £5000 a year for all conditions, or until it has been used up however long it takes, or is it per condition, per year? And do they cover dental treatment, 'cos some insurers don't.
I don't want to move from Pet Plan unless the cover for vets fees is adequate. (The problem I find with PP is that you have to have cover for things we will never use...ie hospitalisation/holiday cover/taking pets abroad/catching burglers!! Mine would invite them in for a cup of tea!!)

Thanks

Sami

Saga : do two plans essential and super essential is £2000 Vets fees and super is £5000 this is each year the super cover covers complementary medicine such as physiopherapy, homeopathy, and herbal remedies will be coverd up to £1000.
They will cover for life no exclusions for conditions which occur whilst your dog is insured and is under 8years when you take policy out
It carries boarding kennel cover if you are ill, third party liability all travelling expense if you are reffered by your Vet and help in finding your pet if ts lost. for an additional £10 they will cover pet whilst abroad.
Tel number is 08000565096.
No I dont work for them :) :) just think its a great policy

When Minnie was a pup she had quite a long going illness and the only money I paid was £35 excess and they paid out promptly

Ive just looked at the health plans too they are very good now im over 50 it may be worth considering its funny how we cover our pets and not ourselves :)
- By sami Date 22.05.03 14:12 UTC
Thanks for that mattie...

Think I'll swop over to them...a saving of £20 a month is worth having.....I have just looked up what my 2 youngsters will cost when their policy comes up again for renewal...and it will go up to £21 EACH with an excess of £65. God only knows what they will charge for the 13 year old, as I'm paying £22 a month now, and that includes £1 per month per dog multi pet discount. (I also have a cat covered with them.)

I've been with Pet Plan since it first came out in the early 80's, and although they've been very good, and I have claimed thousands over the years,(having, at one time 4 dogs, 4 cats and a horse all insured at the same time with them, ) I feel they are pricing themselves out of the market.
