Doris started panting late last evening 2.30 this afternoon she had her first pup,3hours later no sighns of anything happening phoned my vet who suggested i take her in to be checked over she gave birth to one in the car before we reached the vets, the vet said unless she looks destressd and pushing for more than 2hours with no pup to contact straight away wich i already knew about i told him she was asleep when i phoned and i just wnted to no how long between pups do u wait? it was the secretary that made a big fuss about fetching her in straight away .the 3rd pup was born 2hours after the one in the car but my question still remains how long between pups thers a gap of 4 hours now and no sign of another on its way yet, the vet said there was another three at least and shes only had one since he saw her please respond im tired nervous and feeling very sick at this moment......thanx mel

Hi
Don't panic, has she had another puppy yet, some females have a rest in between whelping and this is what she could be doing,is she comfortable, if she's not pushing and no contractions chances are she's having a rest, however she might not be so I would call the vet and see what he/she thinks, she may need some oxytocin to get her going again, but dont get in a lather about things everything sounds as if it's ok so far so chances are it will continue that way, i know how you are feeling, just try and stay calm :)
Try taking her for a trot round this usually helps bring on anaother pup, you might have to force her out of the whelping box though or put her on her lead and just jog her a little bit round the kitchen or somewhere where she wont cme into contact with another dog if you have any :)

Best thing is take her off to the vet to see if she is done, can get her checked over at the same time too. Congratulations on the new arrivals.

Hi
Hows it going, any more pups yet ? some females do go longer than the 3 hours in between and everything is fine, mum ususally settle down more and has a really good sleep whne she's finished but there are no hard and fast rules to this , basically she's finished when she s had her last pup and only time will tell. I would give your vet a ring if you are concerned but whelping is a long job and very tiring for us watching never mind for the female doing all the work.
Let us know how you get on.

hi everyone just to let u all know my dog is fine she had the last one 6.30 yesterday morning ,took her to the vets yesterday teatime and he gave her the all clear he also gave her a injection just to make sure all placentas had come away .Mum is doing fine and all five pups are well 3 girls and 2 boys ,just cant get mum out to toilet dont want to force her any ideas? thanx..

The only way you'll get her to leave her babies is to put a lead on her and force her outside. :(
As soon as she has 'performed' - and she won't hang around - let her off the run back to her family. In my experience this has to be done for about 3 days till the relax a little more - and you can't leave her there for 3 days!
