Could someone please help me, I have recently become the proud owner of a GSD Pup and would like some advice regarding its sleeping pattern etc....
1.I have been putting him to bed at around 10.30ish and then popping of to bed myself, he seems to whinge for a considerable time is this normal and what is the normal time scale for him settling down?
2.When i am house training him should i pick him up mid flow and remove him to the garden?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Hello and congratulations on the new pup:) When I got my GSD bitch she whinged the first few nights - I ignored her;) and she learnt not to bother she was wasting her time:) She's now in a pattern and if I'm staying up particularly late one night to watch a film or whatever she actually takes herself off to bed:o :D As for the house training part- yep....I used to pick her up mid flow and take her outside, the only trouble is though over a year later she still goes to the same spot as we used to put her in as a pup- if I'd have known that I could have trained her to go in a more appropriate area:D I can't remember if we were 3 or 4 weeks of her still trying to pee in the house before she cottoned on:) Good Luck!:)

HI PD, Our pup Sydney went to bed around 9 and slept all night but woke up around 2 then woke up at 6. I could hear him whinging but didnt go down to see him till his 6 oclock call. We used to bring his bed into the living room so he would fall go to sleep whenever he felt like and when we went to bed we would carry him into the kitchen. Now he just goes off to bed when he feels like it in the kitchen.

Do stop him in mid wee. However if you can try not to carry him to the door make him walk so he associates going outside to wee. Remember lots of praise when he goes outside and use the same word each time he goes outside. It will take a bit of time each dog being different, also depends on how often you catch him in the act and stop him and take him out but he will learn. Having said that Sydney now 17 weeks on Saturday poo'd twice upstairs so there will always be accidents.

Best of luck with your little fella

Stacey I wish Sydney would use the one spot in the garden, I find land mines everywhere, and the grass has green patches every where. (not yellow like I thought it would be, must be the good things we give him)

Well Jacky- I have a bitch so my grass is yellow:o :) I think the fact that she's always used the same spot is down to the breeder- when she had the litter she clearly defined the *bed area* and the *toilet area* then as they were moved outside in the kennel they had wood shavings put down in one specific corner to try and define the toileting area as there- so I think she ended up being used to going in one spot- keeping piles of s**t in the one place;)- nice and tidy my bitch is:D
