Topic Dog Boards / General / Old Dog on Holiday!!

Hi
We have just returned from our first ever long weekend in Cornwall, taking our 3 cavaliers with us.
I was worried about how the 2 young ones would be...(it's a 4 hour car journey)

But the one that caused us a worried weekend was Cherry, who's 13.

She wouldn't go to the toilet....and prefered to lay on the WHITE settee and LEAK!!!!
We covered everything with Tesco carrier bags and our towels, plus a double bedspread that we had taken, and kept lifting her and carrying her outside to see if she'd perform.

She wouldn't pee on her lead, she wouldn't potter around outside the cabin, one look outside and she bolted back in....to leak!

Obviously she wouldn't poo either.......but eventually gave in and went 48 hours after we got there. She ambled out onto the enclosed decking balcony and gave in. The relief on her face...(and ours) when she had been, was a picture.

So I think it was rather like taking a 90 year old granny who had never been away, to Ibiza!!

We won't be repeating the experience in her lifetime, which is a shame, because the other 2 had a lovely time.

Sami (who hadn't been away since 1988.....and won't go again until Cherry has gone on her very last trip, to Rainbow Bridge!)

Edited cos I can't spell! :D

We took Mars our dog we lost back in August for her last holiday to Cornwall, she was 13 1/2 at the time. She had such a fantatstic time and loved going into he sea and ran so much in and out of the rock pools. We lived by the sea and went for walks everyday upto the age of two and so the memories must have come flooding back for her ! We have got one of the most fantastic photos of her running wagging her tail with a great big grin on her face and has got pride of place in our lounge! I look at it and it brings back so many happy memories of her everytime I look at it and that is how I always how I want to remember her :)

Hi Lucy
Yes, that's what we were hoping for when we decided to take Cherry this year...we wanted to give her a lovely time...we even bought a new camcorder so that when she isn't around, we have some nice film of her.....Unfortunately all we got were shots of me standing around the cabin in the dead of night, throwing bits of cooked sausages on the ground, trying to tempt her to have a sniff around and hopefully pee!!

That, in turn, alerted the waterfowl on the millpond outside our door, and I ended up having to feed them at 3am in the morning, 'cos they thought it was breakfast time and were honking and quacking!

I'm suprised we didn't get thrown out !!!

Where did you stay ?

It was a place called DeerPark..run by Forestry Commission, near Liskeard.

Beautiful place, where you could take up to 3 dogs per cabin. (Or 2 dogs and a 90 year old incontinent granny!! ) :D

Hi Sami

We have similar problems with our Golden who is almost 14yr. We go to Cornwall 2 or 3 times a year and our young flatcoat has a whale of a time; the last couple of years tho Bree has had her hols with the in-laws (they live close by) who love having her ans she loves them as she gets thoroughly spoilt :)

I agree with you that the journey can be too long for an old dog, and ours really can't be bothered with all the disruption and hustle and bustle
Do you have someone you trust to look after Cherry while you nip off with the other 2 for a long weekend?

Next time take the 90 year old granny with you as well - it won't be the dog that gets the blame for leaking on the white settee ;)

ROFL :D

I was going to blame the old man if I hadn't been able to wash it off!!

No, to previous post....don't have anyone I trust, (to watch her like I do), for us to be able to go away again.......but I've told husband he can go for a holiday in Oz to stay with our daughter later this year....and I will stay with the dogs and cats!

(To be quite honest....I'm a bit like Cherry..'cept I don't pee on the furniture...YET!!!.I'd rather stay at home too!)

I think it must depend on the dog, she was SOO glad to get home, and has been skipping around like a youngster since we returned.

Do dogs get agrophobia? Because even when she was small, whenever she went for a walk, she would winge on the lead wherever we were going, and run like hell once we had turned back to come home!
