The passport is in the name of the dog (and yourself). Driving shouldn't cause you any problems but you will need health certificates to bring the dog through certain countries eg: France.Contract
DERFA for full details.

I have imported a few dogs from abroad and recommend you inspect paperwork before you pick up your pup. We tried importing a dog from Spain and found out that she had failed her blood test a month before she was due back. This meant another 6 months in Spain- most annoying!
You need health certs for most countries and a Pets 5 form in France. You will be asked for this at the boarder. Defra are very helpful and you can fax them your documents for checking before you go. They can also send you a specimen of the Austrian Pet Passport form.

Kate, myself and a friend are currently importing 2 dogs from Finland. We contacted DEFRA and asked them for the relevant forms to complete the passport for finland and we sent them all onto the breeeder. Touch wood, so far has gone OK. Both are chipped, rabies jabbed and tested and passed now just wating for 6 months to be up then hopefully in :D

Hi Bec and James
thankyou for the information its all very daunting we did try and bring a dog in from Hungray last year but he would have had to be quarantined and three days before we were due to fly out there the owner changed her mind! its taken me nearly a year to find a suitable dog to bring in and thankfully the breeders are english speaking which is a great help
so far the puppy hasnt even been born there due in a week but I wanted to make sure we were getting everthing in order so there are no nasty suprises, the only good point is that the puppy will be 9 months old when she arrives so it gives me a excuse to go over there (lots) on holiday to get to know her and see how shes growing!
Good luck with your two Bec let me know how you get on!

10 months old Kate, not 9 unless you are very lucky and the pup is born during in one of the few months that have 4 weeks in them and not 5.
Taken from an earlier thread:
1) the puppy can not have its first rabies vaccination until it is 3 calendar months old. This is followed by a blood test 30 days later. If and when you get an acceptable titre level back (in other words a 'negative' result) you then have to count 6 calendar months from the date that the blood test was taken. I stress calendar months because this is stated in the small print and has been over looked by vets and breeders, who tend to count a puppy's life in weeks and assume that 4 weeks is a month.
The puppy can not come into the UK before it is 10 months old.
2) If the titre level is not adequate (positive result) then you have to start the whole process from scratch again. It is not uncommon for titre levels not to meet the guidelines, so I would recommend that you do what I did, and have a second rabies vaccination done when the blood sample is taken, just to be on the safe side! If the original blood test comes back 'positive', then you only have to wait 15 days for the second blood test. The second blood test rarely comes but positive.
If you type pet passport into the search facility in the top right hand corner of the forum page, it will bring up many past threads on this subject. Good luck

Actually 10 months is the minimum age! The dogs has to be 3 months for its rabies vaccination then 30 days later a blood test is taken. The six months starts from the date the blood test was taken! That makes minimum age 10 months!

Sorry everyone its me that cant read!! I knew they had to be three months to have the rabies shot and then we had to wait a month for the test but I didnt realise it was 6 months from the test I thought it was 6 months from the shot so thankyou everyone for that! hopefully thats the first hitch out the way!
