I am looking for a dog to be a companion to me and a friend to my young children and have read lots and keep being drawn to a smooth collie for their temperament.Does any one have advice on this breed?Thankyou Jordan

Hi Jordan,

As no-one else has given first-hand advice, I'll give you some second-hand stuff ...... I have Rough Collies, I find them a very easy dog to live with and to take anywhere with you, although they can be a little wimpy at times, i.e. with slippery floors etc. Most people I know who have Smooths find them as easy-going as the Roughs, but a little bolder and the better for it. They are very trainable, obviously coat is far easier to deal with, and it's always a surprise to me that they don't have a bigger following.

I would be interested to know more about smooth collies as my 15 mth old bitch is a cross between a border collie (mother ) and what we believe to be a smooth collie (father). I have heard that they are just like rough collies but without the coat but i don't know much about temperaments and trainability. Do they have any general triats like borders, such as a tendency to be nervous or to chase? Just purely out of interest. My girl doesn't seem to want to talk about her family so i'll just have to guess!! ;-)
