Hi,

Can anyone help? I have fallen in love with pugs and would love to have one but i cant afford the breeder prices. I have registered with the pug welfare and rescue society but i know that there is a huge waiting list. What else can i do? Does anyone have or know of a pug that needs rehoming? I would be willing to take on an older pug but i do have cats so it be must be cat friendly. If anyone can help then please email me at colemane5@aol.com i can afford to pay up to about £400. Thanks, Liz

If you can't afford the going rate then there's not a lot more you can do other than what you have. The only thing I can think of is to contact some breeders, let them know your position and then if they get one in a litter that maybe doesn't come up to scratch, they may be willing to let him/her go for a little less. The concernt there is that you might not be getting a healthy puppy and end up with one frought with health problems that will cost you much more in the long run.

If you can't afford the going price, then some breeders may see you as a concern in that if you can't afford the outlay for the puppy, coud you afford the ongoing care.

Some breeders may also let a slightly older puppy go for a bit less if they kept him/her to see if they would come up to show standard and they didn't. Some may also let ex-brood bitches go to new forever homes.

I think you'll probably have to do what most of us have done at some stage and for varying reasons and that is wait. Save up some more and then when you can afford a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder go for it. In the meantime, if a rescue comes along then great.

Whatever you do please please please don't be tempted to go to a puppy farm - who often charge the going rate anyway. Puppies from these establishments are often sickly and have bad temperaments.

Hi Pam & Liz,
Excellent answer Pam, and dont want to depress you too much Liz, but recent breed notes said between 300-400 people were on the waiting list for a rescue pug.It might certainly be worth your while contacting breeders and saying you are looking for an older pug, such as a retired brood bitch. Sorry cant be more helpful, but if it gives a grain of hope we let Shirley Pug go (for free) after she had her 3rd litter.
bye
Gwen
