Just curiosity really but when stud dogs are advertised, what exactly do the oners mean by approved bitches only? What is an approved bitch and how do they get to be approved?

An approved bitch in my understanding is one that the Stud owner considers will be suitable to mate with theri dog. This will usually mean that she sho7uld be a good example of the breed (according to the breed stqandard) her pedigree should be compatible with the males, and that the bitch is healthy, of a suitable age, have relevant health clearances, and that the Stud owner thinks the owner will rear home and care for any resulting pups in a suitable and ethical manner.

hi barbara,
just picking for your opinion, sorry to highjack the thread mr darcy, what if the pedigrees do not tie up within the 4-5 generations and is so to say a outcross. regards tina

By compatible I didn't mean linebred, I meant that the bitch had a quality pedigree and that there were no problems to be doubled up on, as all dogs have good and less good ancestors as regards type health or temperament, which swometimes sadly don't come to light until they already have numerous descendants, and then the better descendants need to be mated with care to minimise the chance of the fault coming through in the progeny.

I agree with brainless but I have found a important question to ask the bitches owners, have they transferred ownership of the bitch into their names, I got caught out years age and just found out when I was helping the bitches owner fill out the k.c. reg forms to register the litter, they had never bothered to change ownership, I always ask this now. We had to wait till this was done and then they had to send away the paperwork to register the litter, some of the buyers were not too pleased at having to wait ages for the paperwork to arrive, this was before new computers were installed at the k.c.

I think i would work on the principle that if they didnt even know about ownership transfer then they shouldnt be breeding....they certainly wouldnt be using MY stud dog!!! In fact I am even stricter than that...not only do the bitches have to be approved but so do the owners!! I wouldnt let anyone I didnt know use one of mine....but then we are numerically a very small breed.
Hi Sam I do feel often the paper work thing can be a bit confusing for people but I do agree with you if they cant organise the papers how on the earth are they going to manage to rear the pups and sort out their paperwork!!!

A friend of mine had bought a dog in, and had merrily been showing him for two years or so, and it wasn't until he won a Stud book qualifying award that it was realised that she had forgotten to transfer him to9 her name! Thankfully the KC accepted her explanation that she had forgotten it in the house move, and did not disqualify him from his awards!

Hi Guys,
Am I not correct in saying that some bitches remain in the original bitches breeder's name for breeding terms etc and there is also endorements to think of , the breeder has to send the letter from the original breeder to have the litter registered.
So sometime hiccups are genuine. :-)

Hi Sam, this lady was not told by the breeder she got her bitch from that she had to transfer ownership, as it had never happened to me before I did not think to ask, I took it for granted that she knew and had done the transfers. She did have a lovely healthy litter of puppies and was delighted. Its amazing the number of people that have not transferred ownership of puppies ive even bred and I fill in all the forms in front of them and explain that they have to transfer ownership. I bet if most of us contacted the k.c. over theyears we would find that we still "own" an awful lot of dogs. The only reason I found this out was when I moved house and transferred the dogs I had to my new address and the k.c. asked me about all the others in my name!!!!!!!!!

They put all the Breed Recorsds supplement info in our breed club yearbook, and I have noticed that only about half the pups I have bred have ever been transfered into their owners names.
As I give out Puppy Cover notes for another company, I suppose they don't need to for insurance purposes, and don#t bother.
