Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / what can I feed
- By Sandie [gb] Date 09.05.03 16:57 UTC
I have been feeding my dogs JWB since I got them but with 5 dogs its getting very expensive, I have looked at other dry dog food which seems alot cheaper but I dont know which one to change to.
I had thought about Beta, does anyone have any suggestions and prices to give me ideas.
Thanks.

There is a HUGE variety of dried foods available :) I used Wafcol for quite a while before I changed over to feeding raw meat and biscuits.

Wafcol Homepage the prices were quite good. Other people will swear by Beta , other Nutro ...

One thing to consider when feeding a cheaper brand of complete, is the amount of 'bulking' ingredients included in the food. You may find that when you are clearing up twice as much 'waste' from your dogs, that a cheaper food is a false economy. I would rather pay more and have less to pick up :-)

I personally think u will end up buying more food beause the cheaper the food the more they have and will eat and more cleanup in the end. I usta feed Alpo, purina but went through a bag pretty fast plus I never cared for the ingredients then I switched to Eukanuba/Iams, then switched to Nutro Natural Choice and found less cleanup from them, and they also love the food more. I found this to be cheaper but the ingredients seem to be alot better which I like. Me personaly I prefer a dog food to start with a meat meal, and no byproducts or cornmeal. I also have 5 dogs to feed :)

Just my own personal opinion :)

Just compare ingredients and go for what u think is best, what works on one dog may not work on another.

Give Omega Tatsy a try. It retails between 9.99 and 14.99 for a 15 kilo bag depending where you buy it. I have fed it for years with excellent results to large and small breeds. They all love it and do well on it. When new foods come out I do try them sometimes but haven't found a food that they enjoy so much.

Hi Sandie,

JWB is a very good food and if you go to some of the cheaper dry foods, which have lesser quality ingredients (such as Beta, Omega, Pedigree, Bakers), you will need to feed more to get the goodness and also your dogs health may decline, ie. poor quality coats, tummy problems etc because of the ingredients.

Have you tried Burns, this is a good one, not sure of the price difference between this and JWB. Many of these good quality food companies have breeders clubs, which offer vouchers etc and money off their food. Have you tried contacting JWB and asking.

Nutro and Naturediet both have breeders clubs, which makes buying the food a lot cheaper.

I think its horses for courses, Manda, I have never thought of Beta as a poorer quality food, my two (9 & 14) have had very active and healthy lives on it and I have reared 3 good litters on the puppy version. JWB may also be a very good food but it does not suit mine at all, the low output that so many people seem to think is a good thing caused my terrier to cry with constipation. Give me the good firm, but bulky stools the Beta produces any day for healthy bowels and empty sacs :)

Hi Sandy,

I switched my oldest one onto Autarky Light - and she does really really well on it, no diffference in coat or weight to Hills Light either. Also you do not feed more weight of food to get the same effect. It is GM free and full of naturel stuff" nd costs me only around £15 pound per 15 kg bag compared to 50 odd for Hills. The younger one is still on hills though as he didn't go for the autarky, but its still cut my feed bill massively!

Unfortunateky it can be hard to get hold of, but i am sure thay have a website, just have to search under google!

I have been trying out the Autarky adult 22% protein with 28% chicken meat. I have been using it with a 100g of green tripe on top, previously fed Arden Grange, which they do really well on, and sometimes Pedigree Advance (but Pedigree have sold it off, and have yet to introduce a new Premiym range). We are on our second month on it, and they certainoly reallylike the tase of all the herbs and spices that are included in the recipe.

My main reason for trying it is that one of the girls tends to every so often throw up bile in the mornings, and some of the herbs in the recipe are known to be good for indigestion. So far so good. Just waiting to see how good it is for coat condition, as they have been moulting, so can't really judge that yet!

Their Website is rather basic, but does give a search facility for suppliers. http://www.autarky-foods.com/

At the moment I have the girls on Beta light but it has made no difference to their weight even though they are on a reduced amount, the boys are still on JWB. I have been looking at Autarky and am thinking about this for them as it sounds like a good food.
