Hi my name is Amanda and I have a puppy almost 8 wks old. The breed of my puppy is a pomeranian. Today I brought her to the vet and she was diagnosed with a heart murmer. The scale is 1-6. She is a #1. I feel a little uneasy about this and just wanted to know if others have experienced this sort of thing. The vet thinks it may go away as she grows and become an "innocent" heart mumer. Please could someone give me some feedback. Thank-you, hope to see some responses soon.

Many pups can have an innocent 'flow' murmur, which is graded at 1 or 2, and the intensity is linked to the heart rate. They are completely harmless and usually disappears fairly quickly as the pup grows. Don't worry, as long as your pup is lively and putting on weight like she should. Our vet told us the incidence of flow murmurs is fairly high when pups come in for their first jab, whereas the incidence of 'pathological' murmurs (indicating a heart problem) is fairly low. If you do a search for 'heart murmur' you'll find lots of previous threads on the subject, I know it can be worrying when your vet mentions those words (our Minx had a grade 6 murmur when we took her in for her jabs, but it disappeared quickly and she has always been full of beans!)

As it is a low grade murmer and she is so young it may well go away. Boxers certqainly can be bred from with Grade 1 murmers.

I sold a pup to a couple (an as far as I know my breed isn't prone to t6his problem), and got the fright of my life, as it was taken for its first jabs at 8 weeks, and the vet could hear a murmer. Two weeks later there was no sign of it when she went for her final jabs. It could well be that more baby (innocent murmers) are being picked up with pups having their immunisations a week or two earlier than previously.

As menetioned above, even if the murmer persists at grade 1 it will never likely cause her any trouble. My freind has aaa Dobe that has just had her 13th birthday, and she has had a heart murmer all her life and outlived all her other dogs, despite a Thyroid problem, and being ridled with cancerous masses all over her body. She was expected not to last 6 weeks 18 months agpo, and isa still happily pottering aroun, her autocratic grumpy self, and still plays with her toys, and demands her grub, and a walk (though it is only around the block)!

Well I would like to thank everyone for being so nice and getting back to me so soon. Today my puppy (Cleo) is doing fine. She seems to be very active and happy. I have an appt. in three weeks for her next booster, I will let everyone know how it goes and how the murmer is doing and whether it is gone or not. Thanks for all your support everyone, we really appreciate it.
