We have adopted a beautiful golden retriever from the humane society. The only problem is after we got her home we found out she has Sarcops. We are treating her but I think my daughter has two spots on her back now that are itching. Does anyone know if this will just go away or does it have to be treated and how long does it take to get rid of?
Thank you so much for the help

Hi, has your vet told you about Stronghold? It is a drop on (like Frontline) that will treat and prevent sarcops. I have found it very reliable and use is regualrly as prevention after it cured an outbreak here. I had an outbreak of it about 6 years before that, when Stronghold was not on the market and we tried washes, Ivermectin - everything that was available but sadly 2 did not respond to treatment and after 18 months were PTS. With the last (and hopefully final) outbreak all dogs were treated immediately with Stronghold and within 6weeks were clear. Two or sometimes 3 monthly applications is the only reliable treatment that I know of. Ivermectin can be used but it can have serious side effects. These mites may bite humans for a day or two but cannot live prmanently on humans and die within 3-4 days, so dont worry about the human family. If you have any other dogs/cats then they shuld be treated with Stronghold too, as should any dog she has regularly been in contact with, it is extremely catching. There has been lots of discussion on here about sarcops if you do a search " sarcoptic mange" quite a lot will come up. I have to add that one or two posters dogs' may have had a reaction to Stronghold, but I think the incidence is very low. Sarcops is the most awful infestation to get rid of and does need strong drugs to do it, imo Stronghold is the safest and most trustworthy and considering how well it works very inexpensive. Keep the dog in isolation from all other fur bearing animals until 2 weeks after the final lesion has healed. Also have you informed the place you got her from - they should be told. Good luck.

The vet has been giving her Revolution. Is that the same? I was worried about the kids because the vet said it would cause small red bumps that itch and we would need to get a perscription for "quell" if we got it. When I saw my daughter scratching her back I started to worry. We vacume everyday and I am changing her bedding every day is there anything else I am not thinking of?

Stronghold is known under a different name in the USA. Now who can remember what it is called???

Edited on 8th May for correct American brand name for Stronghold, which is Revolution!

Welcome to the forum Chloe. To my knowledge sarcoptic mange can not live on the human body for very long at all and usually any itching is on wrists and arms. Are you sure that it isn't ringworm? It might be worth getting it checked out as ringworm is highly contagious.

I am not sure it could be ring worm but it is on her back so I have called our dr. and I am going to take her in today. I did not even think of that thanks!

Hopefully it won't be, but best to check if it is very itchy. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the help. It looks like it was just a spider bit. They said everything will be fine. Princess is doing better also. Her coat is cleaning up and she is eating mutch better. Thank you for all the help! I guess I get overly worried when any member of the family is not doing well. Thanks so mutch.
