Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / dog has recurring fever/symptoms--11 mos

My 7 year old chow/samoyed has been sick with a fever (103-104) on and off for almost a year now. The symptoms start with loss of appetite for 3-4 days, listlessness and weakness. Our vet has run all kinds of blood tests, xrays, teeth have been cleaned and gums examined. She has been treated with anti-biotics, Prednisone and Tegamet for one to two weeks until symptoms are gone only to return again within a month or more. I am concerned about the frequent use of these drugs and what effect it will have on her overall health. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I would seek blood tests and further investigation, maybe by another vet. Prednisolone is a steroid and Tagamet is an antacid you can buy in a chemist. Can't see the connection myself, but then I'm not a vet.

Hi Rose,

I wouldn't leave it there, I would insist on further investigation, maybe even ask to be referred to one of the big hospitals or even have a chat with a homeopathic vet, these can be used alongside traditional drugs, except for steroids or hormones because they block the homeopathic treatment and stop it working.
