I have a 4 year old male welsh terrier (neutered). I am now looking for a wire haired fox terrier puppy. One breeder has told me not to have two male terriers as when the younger one matures they will fight. Is this true. She said they would fight to the death and you can only keep two female terriers together or a male and a female.

I would have thought that two bitches were worse than two dogs especially in Fox or Welsh Terriers.

Your best bet would be to get a bitch puppy.

I know a lot of wire and smooth fox terier breeders and they very rarely can keep their stock together.

This was quite a surprise to me with my Border Terriers as they are brilliant together, I run a pack of 7 bitches and 4 dogs (including two stud dogs) and have no problems at all.

Although I will say that if anyone wants to add a second BT to their family I would always suggest the opposite sex. As with any terriers you need to be pack leader and that doesn't always happen in a pet situation.

Hello,

Some terriers are a real problem and others are not. You will find some breeders even have to split their litters up because they will start fighting before they go to new homes. Thats terriers for you!! :)

I would also go with a bitch, male terriers do sometimes have a problem together, but again it depends on the breed. Border Terriers, as another poster said, do have an excellant temperament and many seem to be able to live together without a problem. Other terriers will be much more of a problem, somtimes Jack Russels (not the Parsons) are a problem with fighting and arguing.

My friend and her husband have Cairns, Wire Fox Terriers and Norwich. They all run together with no problem. I've only had bitches and had to give up one because of fighting (GSDs, Cairn and Yorkie). It's not just males that fight with each other, sometimes two dogs simply do not get along.

I have 4 boston Terriers 2 females and 2 males (1 male still intact). When they faught I sprayed them with water and let them know who is alpha which is me and then my intact male. The little one is his son but he's fixed and still tried to be alpha I just put him in his place in the pack and now all is well.

ttfn :)
