I have two 6 month old puppies, Abby has brain damage but she manages okay, I am very reluctant to have her spayed. My problem is that I need to have Sam neutered before Abby has a season, my question is will Sam lose all interest in Abby when he has been neutered or will he still find Abby irresistable when she is in season

In a word: No.

I've known a few neutered male dogs who will mount and tie with a female in full heat. On the other hand, if Abby wasn't interested and didn't LET him, then you're less likely to have any situations occur. Most neutered dogs do lose interest for the most part, but if a female was flirting with even the least interested male, anything could happen.

Why would this be an issue, anyway - if a neutered male dog mates an entire female, there won't be any puppies...?

Many thanks, I am very protective to Abby, she is very tiny and because of her problems loses her balance, Sam is very boistrous with her but if ever he tries to grab her round the neck she makes the most terrible noise, dont think I could possibly allow him any 'fun' with her.

It can depend on how close to the bitches season that you get the male done. Really, you need to set about getting him done asap, the only problem with getting a puppy neutered so young is that they can tend to stay puppylike a lot longer (which could prove a problem for you and your bitch).

What breed are they and is the bitch showing any signs of coming into season yet? Is there anyone who could have your boy while she has her first season? Thsi could then give you time to make an informed decision instead of having to rush into it?

Thanks for the information, following what you have said I have booked Sam for next week. Obviously I cant risk Abby coming into season before Sam is done. It's a dilemma knowing what to do for the best, lets hope I have made the right decision. They are Yorkies. Abby isnt showing any signs yet of her first season, but obviously Sam is having a surge of hormones. When they were 3 months I asked the vet about Abby, and yes there will be more of a risk for her with an anaesthetic, so again I will really have to think carefully about her. Thanks once again.

given your situation, and to prevent any rough play, why not have the bitch speyed?

That would make sense to me too - I had a castrated dog who would go wandering at the slightest opportunity when the local Rottie bitch was in season - and this went on for several years so the delay after having the chop didn't ever seem to have any effect..........
