hi i have a litter of 11 pups 8 days old, all doing well untill this morning, one of the pups was ill took her to the vet had a shot of antibiotic picked up through the day, took her back to the vet at 5pm to check her over. they said she was fine and sent me home with her but at 8.15 pm went down hill again so is staying at the vets, has anyone any ideas on what the problem could be. i asked the vet they just said a virus. any advice would be appreciated.

Can't advise without knowing more of the symptoms, but one thing I would be doing is getting the rest of the litter on anitbiotics, just in case. I know the vet said it was a virus, but better safe than sorry.

At 8 days old it is still possibly fading puppy, or it could just be a case of the pup not getting enough milk, being pushed out by siblings. I have had this happen a few times in big litters , and I top them up to stop them dehydrating.

Hi Yvonne
Typical symptoms of Fading Puppy Syndrome are loss of desire to suckle, temp., shaking/fitting, floppy when picked up.
I had a litter of Bordeaux pups that suffered from this and believe it or not it is usually the biggest to go down with it first.
On first symptoms mine went to the vets, had anti-biotic jabs, came home and seemed to pick up only to start fading again :-(.
There is no anti-biotic that can cure the FPS they can only help prevent secondary infections.
My advice to you is to try to keep this pup away from the rest of the litter (feed separate). If she appears to be fading again or any of the others appear to be loosing interest to suckle, temp. rise or become floppy you need to act fast.
Ask your vet if he has heard of "Plasma Transfusion".
I lost 5 from a litter of 9 with FPS. The remaining 4 were fading fast too. I searched and searched the internet for a cure as they were not responding to any anti-biotics at the vets. I found an article whereby plasma taken from a recently vaccinated dog - preferably mom or dad - was injected into the pups veins in the legs.
Our vet tried this treatment for me though he had not heard of it before. We used the father who luckily received his vacc. about a week or so before.
Within a few hours of this plasma transfusion the pups were crying for food and moving around. The change was amazing. They all went on to be vey healthy dogs. Without this transfusion I would have lost the entire litter.
Hopefully your pup does not have FPS but please watch her closely as the others in the litter and if it does seem to be FPS please ask your vet for a Plasma Transfusion. If he has not heard of it please email me and I will give you my vets details for you or your vet to contact.
Do a search under "New Hope For Fading Puppy Syndrome" and you can see my article in more detail.
Please keep us informed how things go.

Yes it is my story. It is on Pedigreedogs I think.
It was in Ourdogs and is in our SBTC club magazine. A few others have contacted me asking if they can use it for their breed magazines.
I always say yes because the more places it gets the more chance of others facing a similar situation have of their pups hopefully surviving. :-)

I wonder if there really is a bug going round cause I have a litter of 7 week old puppies but last week they picked up what seemed to be a bug and off to the vets we all went. They were given an antibiotic jab and some Kaogel (they had the scoots !). they did lose a little weight but have more than made up for it now. Their tempertature's were all normal and they were all bright eyed. Within 36 hours everything was back to what it should be like, although I am convinced I must be feeding them rocket fuel !

NOW I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER, JUST NOTICED MY GOLDEN IS LOOKIN OFF IT, ALTHOUGH SHE HAS`NT BEEN IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE PUPS THE DAM DOES USE THE SAME YARD TO GO TO THE TOILET. ALSO MY SISTER HAS HAD 5 COCKERS ILL AND A LAB THAT DIED BUT SHE HAS`NT BEEN IN CONTACT WITH MY LITTER AND SHE LIVES 24MILES AWAY. I THINK THE BEST THING TO DO IS TREAT THEM ALL.
