some of you may remember that i've been stuck as to what to get hubby for his 40th. been a funny couple of weeks - he's away in the gulf - he missed my 40th last week and will miss his own on saturday may 3rd. also, we are due to go on a joint b'day cruise on wednesday may 7th and at the momemt we don't know if he'll be home !.
anyway, it's been really difficult for him to contact me, he's had to use his mobile as there are no other facilities. spoke to him earlier and he mentioned that some of the guys there are planning to get laptops. so, obviously that's given me an idea. i wonder then, can anybody advise me of the do's and don'ts when buying a laptop. what should i be looking for ?. i know absolutely nothing about them at all and would really appreciate some advice. thank you.

just off out now though with puppy to his weekly class - he's in the 'wet nose group' - everybody say "aaahhh bless" !!!.

Hi Val

If you are going to buy a laptop, the general rule is to get the best you can afford at the time, the advances in technologies mean that all computers will be out of date nearly as soon as you buy it! Get one with as large a hard drive as possible (ie 40gb min), min 2.0ghz prossessor and min 256 ram. This will set you back anything between £700 - 1500, the best makes to go for are: Compaq, Dell, Samsung and Sony. Sony are by far the best but also the most expensive!

Do get one with a DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive (they will know what you mean!)
Do get one with a built in modem (they all do these days)
Do get one that can be upgraded in the future

Don't get one that has a screen size less than 14.2 inch
Don't buy one second hand (that will be asking for trouble!)

All info came from my hubby, so no asking me any technical questions:D

He has just told me to tell you he has the Dell Inspiron 8500 (www.dell.co.uk) retails for around £1200.00 without software, up to £2000.00 with software depending on what you want.

Hope this is of some help
