My girl is day 53 of her pregnancy, today she has been sick a couple of times, just frothy nothing too yucky, but she's also not eating, is this normal at this stage of pregnancy? or do you think I should take her to the vet? She's not been eating much any way the past few days I just put it down to her belly getting rather over crowded now, I can still feel the pups move and she seems fine in herself.

Thanks
Jenny

Hello,

If it's in the mornings, I wouldn't worry too much, we find that some bitches have morning sickness....bless them. The fact that she is not eating much is not too good, you need to start increasing their food intake in the final couple of weeks of pregnancy and if she doesn't want it, there could be a problem. Do you feed her little and often? We find that some bitches need to be fed four times a day and we sometimes even give them a meal in the middle of the night, so the amount of food in one go is kept small.

Good luck and hope everything is ok.

She has been sick during the day today, but seems to have picked up over the past couple of hours, she ate a good sized meal at 5pm and kept it down! Maybe she's just unfortunate and gets all day sickness like I did!!

I will keep a close watch on her though, we do have a vets appointment tomorrow so I will mention it to her.

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny

Might be worth splitting the amount of food you give her into two half sized meals, morning and evening, could be the developing pups are making it uncomfortable for her to digest a full meal.

Hi my bitch was sick a few times during her pregnancy as well, but, I dont feed any extra at all as this can result in large puppies that they cannot deliver themselves, I must have been doing something right as she has just welped 7 puppies which is a large litter for my breed (westies) I also give kelp (seaweed powder) and 1 odourless garlic tablet and 1 cod liver oil tablet in the food once a day, I fed my bitch twice a day, now she is on 3/4 meals a day cooked chicken with rice then I will slowly introduce her normal feeding as the pups get a bit older. One of the puppies has a black nose and pads already and they are only 2 days old!!!

Thanks for all your replies, I think she must have been having an off day, today she is back to normal, eating for England and growing!!!

Not much longer thank goodness :-)

I would just like to add that I think irene has been lucky with her litter, But I would not reccomend giving a pregnant bitch cod liver oil or kelp as they are full of vitamin A, Which can cause deformaties in puppies.

I gave wheatgerm oil before mating and up to 3 weeks after, then started on the Raspberry leaf..............but nothing else!

My girl seems fine now, she's been eating non-stop I think this must be the build up ready for whelping :-o

Will let you know how things progress

Hi there,

Just typed a bloo-y post and Lparkins ate it..

I can't remember what I said LOL

Anyway I have read that the sickness is common right up to whelping occasionally it is the bitches body's way of getting rid of things it thinks is harmful to the puppied development ( even if it is not ) . Not sure how accurate it is but read it in a really good book. It also tells breeders of the pregnancy ( although I don't think this was natures reason LOL)

Re the supplements Vit A or at least supplemented quantities of it should be avoided in the 1 or 2 stage of pregnancy ( 6 weeks) Cod liver oil is recommended before mating and in the last week or 2 and certainly after pups are born but not in the first 6 weeks. There is a link to deformaties as bliss mentioned. 2 or 3 of the last Books I have read stress this in bold writing.

Vit E, B and C are believe to be good but I would honestly say never use them unless 100% confident of their benefits and any risks. A balanced diet is really I guess what is required.

Good luck with you bitch , hopefully we will hear of a healthy litte very shortly.. :-)

fingers crossed and well wishes Pam

MY bitch was vet checked at 4/5 weeks into her pregnancy and the vet knew I gave these supplements and said it would be o.k. she only got a quarter of a teaspoon of kelp and 1 cod liver oil tablet and 1 odourless garlic tablet a day. I did ask as I saw a posting on this site about kelp, so I cut down the amount I usually give, puppies and mum are doing well and have been vet checked since being born.
