Hi,
The 1st stage can last up to 24 hours with no problems, but if you are worried don't hesitate to ring your vet and discuss the symptoms.

When she hs started to visibly contract for over an hour with no progress call the vet immediately.

:)

our other bitch seems very keen to help (granny) were a little dubious about this although she's got milk and the mother seems quite willing. What do you think?

Be guided by the mum. I would give her two or three days on her own with the pups, because she's the one with the vital colostrum, but after that if everybody's happy sharing, then there shouldn't be any problems.
:)
