Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood blister?
- By HappyStaffy [gb] Date 26.04.03 16:41 UTC
Have noticed on my younger bitch, that each time after she exercises, what can only be described as a "blood blister" appears on her left foreleg, approx 1 inch before the base of the radius. When swollen It is the size of a pea, purplish in colour, she will nibble away causing it to burst/bleed. The fact that she is licking it must mean its uncomfotable for her?
Anybody come accross anything similar?

Hi Ged,

I have never come accross anything quite like this, but sounds maybe like she has got something in there, maybe a grass seed or a thorn and because the blood is pumping round faster when she exercises, it causes this area to blow up and become itchy. Does it feel hot when it first comes up?

I would suggest a visit to the vet, just in case it is something to worry about.

Good luck

Had it only happend once I would have thought of a tic, but if it happens almost every time she exercises then I would have thought of a vet. Could well be something in the leg or a weak walled blood vessel, or something else we have not or could not think of.

Thanks for the replies.... The growth/blister had burst @ 11'ish this morning after running aroung for a couple of hours earlier. Squeezed the blood out and cleaned the what I suppose could be described as a wart like growth, it looked clean. What was left was a slightly raised area, bit like after a boil has been cleaned, you can see the scar but it looks clean? Well I have just checked her again at 22.30 and its engorged again. She is not bothered by it, no heat, no swelling around the area, but it does look like a possible blood vessel problem, same thing in the same spot. She will be booked into the vets for Wednesday, unfortunately shift pattern cancels out any time earlier, unless it gets any more serious?
