Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy treats?

My Boxer puppy is almost 12 weeks now - what "treats" would I be able to give him? So far he's having some dog chocolate drops when we do some training etc - but I would like to vary this as I think dog choc should be given less frequently.

Hi Dexy
we give Pedigree Markies- they are like little marrow bone biscuity things and they do puppy ones and Gus loves them .
When we were toilet training outside we would give one as a treat if he *performed* so to say ( and no, I dont mean dressing up as a clown and singing :D )
He loves them
Also our trainer uses chopped up garlic sausage ( in moderation of course) or hot dog sausages cut up

We give Murphy liver cake - I got the recipe from this board.
He loves it and it's the only training 'treat' he has.

Only problem is - it smells the house out when you make it....phew!

Good grief! I think our dogs eat better than humans!

:D
My boys moan Gus is treated well better than them with all his goodies :)

I found when my dog was a pup that the most effective treat was mature cheddar cheese cut into tiny pieces (fingernail sized) he adored it. Now that he is older he gets puffed dried beef or dried liver, broken into fingernail sized pieces. I also use this for the dogs I groom too and its brought many a reluctant hound round - and very quickly too :)

I must admit I do give him cheese - the breeder used it to show me how she trains her pups to "stand". He loves it and can smell it a mile off when I do cheese and biscuits. I saved a bit of fresh mince meat for him the other day - he loved it! The only thing was that he was constantly jumping up at the kitchen cupboards after that - probably looking for more!!! :)
