Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / pregnant dog sister has milk??why?
- By guest [us] Date 18.04.03 03:38 UTC
Hello, my penny girl is on day 60 and her sister allie has little driplets of milk, she shows no signs of pregnancy, she is quite tucked in and if she was pregnant she would be just as far long as penny ( they were in heat at the same time) any clue as to why? Could it be just instinct, maybe she knows her sister is pregnant. Any thoughts would help. thanks Heather

Hi,
Not sure here, but could she be having a phantom pregnancy? Since it isnt actuall natural for a fully matured bitch to NOT be pregnant (i mean when dogs were wild, etc, is not GOOD for them to always be pregnant!!!!!!!!) then many bitches come into season, then their bodies fully expect them to be pregnant, so they have a phantom pregnancy. I would expect that living with a close relative who IS pregnant will also have helped confuse matters for her as well.

However, i could be wrong (hehehehe, can and am frequently its nothing new). See what everyone else has to say.

I'm afraid this goes back to when dogs were wild. This is a phantom pregnancy and is due to the pack instinct of feeding the new litter, or so I was told many years ago...all to do with alpha bitch etc.

With both of the bitches watch out for MASTITUS, check every day for small hard lumps and an increase in temperature around the mamory glands. Can be easily treated if caught early by placing a warm compress on the affected mamory gland, eg hot water bottle wrapped in tea towel. Other than that enjoy the sleepless nights!!!
