Topic Dog Boards / General / Disinfect yard prior to pup's arrival?
- By Jo19 [gb] Date 13.04.03 22:29 UTC
Hope you don't mind all the questions everyone.

I might be getting a bit over-the-top but I'm wondering whether I should disinfect my yard prior to my pup's arrival. The thing is, I live right next to a river and park, so there's a good chance that there are lots of rats around. Until vaccination my pup will only be given the run of places known to be safe, which would include my yard. But, I'm now a bit worried that there might be a slight risk of Lepto if rats have gathered to do whatever rats do in my yard at night. Never seen any of course but don't want to expose my pup to risk if it can be avoided. Do you think I should disinfect the yard or am I being silly?

Thanks

Jo

Hi Jo,
No, I don't think you're silly at all (clearly you care, which is never silly!), but I think you're worrying unnecessarily. :) Who knows what wild animals go through their garden/yard at night? I know we have foxes, hedgehogs, mice and rats (I've seen them), but have raised litters of pups using the garden without any health problems.

Make sure your pup has it's jabs, and I'm sure you'll be fine. The greatest risk is from other (unvaccinated) dogs.

Good luck, and enjoy your pup! :)
