Topic Dog Boards / Health / slushy poo Advice needed

Hello everyone
It's been some time since i last posted a message but i'd be grateful for any advice.
My 13mth male Westie (Buddy) has had an on going problem with soft poo ever since i've had him. He's needed his anal glands attending to by the vet 3 times. He was on Nutro puppy until a yr old then introduced gradually to Nutro Adult (for sensitive tums) but even this was too much for him. He's been on Winalot Friskies which he loves. The protein and fat content are lower than the Nutro which the Vet approved of but says in some dogs the fat in the food is harder to digest and so causes mushy poo. He says to look for a food which is between 5-8% fat. Anyone out there know of a good brand.
Buddy is showing no ill effects from all this but hates having his anal glands messed with as you can imagine. He's lively, alert, playful etc.
Is there anything i can give him to help firm up his poo.
Thanks
Budmag

I can't think of a low fat food but I do know that mashed potatoes without milk or butter added is very good for upset tums. It is much easier to digest and better than rice, try that with fish or chicken and then very slowly add a dog food. Maybe even give half and half.

Wafcol's ranges have less fat than many, around 4%. They also do a number of special diets, one is Salmon and Potatoe, they do a Fish and Corn, and a Gluten free.

Hi Budmag,

My Cairn had very soft poos until she broke her leg! She seems to be mostly normal now and I attribute the change to a week of antibiotics post-surgery. I believe she had a low grade infection with no other symptoms other than the soft poo.

If you have not already tried a course of antibiotics I would do so.
