branched from here
Day 15 since her first tie. Shes got small amount of white discharge, not dripping, just a spot now and then. I believe that's a good sign. Do any of you know if I need to be concerned? Should I take her in. It's a little sticky but not smelly at all. It's white not yellow.
Hi dede
My bitch is 16 days from her first mating and also has white disharge wich she usually does so In our case its normal but keep your eye on her especially if she goes of her food or seems at all unwell, better safe than sorry!

Kate, I didn't realize kao was you so your right I'm glad admin posted as well. Thank you for responding so fast. I had called the vet but he had not as of yet returned my call. Nugget is acting fine and eating well. She isn't needing to go out anymore then usual. She's still running after all the kids. She seem as little bit more tierd then usual but not litless. If you know what I mean. When shes up playing around or chasing the cat she acts normal. But she is sleeping more.
Hi dede
vets are a right pain charge you a fortune and never call you back when you ask!
I wouldnt worry to much im sure white disharge as long as it isnt smelly is a sign of pregnancy so hopefully it will be good news for you!
let me know what happens!

Okay, so now I’m really scared. My vet just called me back and told me that Nugget may have a uterus infection. He has not seen her, but he said that if she is having a white discharge it could be a uterus infection. I asked him how we could find out and he said that you really couldn’t without going into the uterus and that would abort the puppies. He said the only treatment would be spaying her. So then I reminded him that his partner put her on cephalexix antibiotics about 1 week ago for a little ear infection and would that help her if she did have an uterus infection. He said that if she were taking that for a week then it would be less likely that she would have a uterus infection. He told me to watch her and see if she acted different, not eating right and so on, and if I saw any difference in her to bring her in and have her spayed. Then he just called me back and said that he checked in his medical book and looked up Cephalexin and found that there is no evidence of any problems with giving it to a pregnant dog, but that it does cross the placenta and that if her ear infection has cleared up to stop giving it to her. So do I do that, or is he wrong. Should I keep giving it to her while I keep an eye I her to make sure she’s acting right. As I said before she does seem more tired. But couldn’t that be from being bred. I don’t know what to do now. I had a lot of confidence in him before. But now since I’ve found out from all of you that I should have waited until she was 2 before I bred her instead of 19 months. I was thinking I don’t know if I should trust him…….

Hi dede
Dont panic uterine infections can be very serious but I am sure white dishcharge does not signify one and your vets solution is very extreme seeing he hasnt even seen the bitch
Bitches that have poltmetria (utrine infection) often dont actual have any disharge just a raised temperature and vomiting.
I would check your girls temerature and arrange for her to see the vet for a check up It may be worth looking for a vet who has more experiance with breeding bitches
I would be very warey of a vet that makes a diagnosis over the phone.
My bitch has a white disharge and all of my bitches exept one have when they are in whelp
so as long as she is well, doesnt have a temperature and isnt off her food I would try not to worry
Can you get hold of the book called-book of the bitch by J.M Evans & Kay White over there it is a god send in times of worry!
Hopefully there will be someone else along shortly to advise you as well Im logging off in a minute but feel free to email me privatley if your worried

I have already purchased the book of the bitch from Amazon.com. I had ordered it before she was bred, but there was some problem and I was just notified that it will be coming April 10th. I sure hope so.
I did more checking on the internet and found many places which listed Cephalosporins as a safe drug during pregnancy. I assume that cephalexin is the same. I took Nugget in for a full once over to the vet just a few weeks ago, before I bred her to make sure all was good. Everything seems normal right now except the fact that she is sleeping more and wants to always be with me. I believe that could be because she is bred. Have any of your dogs sleep more after mating?

the discharge, it's perfectly normal to have a clear/opaque mucous discharge without odour from day 35, it's just signs of a healthy pregnancy!
Good luck

Hi dede1001, When I noticed this same white discharge from my American Cocker just after she was mated, I too panicked like mad. I thought the worst, that she had some awful infection that would endanger her litter. I spoke to my bitch's breeder who is very very experienced, and he assured me that as long as the discharge had no smell and didn't look dirty and the bitch was well in herself then it was most likely to be a good sign. The hormones are beginning to kick in. I have been really reassured by this, and also by the information received from board members, and the bitch is absolutely fine.
Good Luck with your litter, Dawn R.

Thank you so much, everyone for answering. I can't tell you what a relief it is. I can't imagine how many people who would have had no experence and no other source for information in this may have taken their bitch in and had her spayed. Thank you, each and everyone who took the time to answer. You may have saved these puppies lives. with the utmost graditude Thank You. Debbie
Hi Debbie
Im glad you are feeeling more relaxed now and the panicks off! time to sit back and enjoy and wait for the new arrivals!

You bet I will. And thanks again

Trouble is Dede as you have learnt, unless a vet is a breeder they know very little about breeding dogs. what they are taught is how to deal with disease and injury. Unfortunately they oft4en fal into the trap that many of their clinets fall into thinking they are the font of all knowledge about matters canine.
Aws others have said if the discharge is clean and not offensice it is just part of the nomral mucous produced during a bitches hormonally active phases.
I bet the vet wasn't femal?? :D

yes your right the vet is a male. And when this is all said an done I have every intention of speaking with him regarding it. He really is a nice guy and in all other dealings I thought I had confidence in him. It's for that reason I plan on speaking with him frankly about it after I'm sure everything is okay. Maybe by doing so he'll learn a little more about it so the next time he gets the same call, he'll have something else to go on.

Hi
When one of my bitches had the same type of discharge that you have described, my vet said there was no way she could be in whelp if she had discharge and wanted to put her on antibiotics which I refused,

Hello everyone, just an update. I received my book "The Book of the Bitch" 3 days ago and have read it cover to cover and will continue to read it again. I feel so much better being able to have direction in assisting her if she needs me to do so. You are all very right it is a god send. Nugget seems to be doing okay. She is not a playful as usual. She'll still play if I start it but otherwise she'll just lay around a lot. She is eating and drinking normal and her tits look a little longer to me. I can't believe it but I think I see her tummy a little thicker to . She is urinating about the same, I haven't seen any change in that. She is vomitting once in awhile in the morning, this last week. A little bit of white foam. I think she's going to have puppies. I'll keep in touch and let you all know.
One last thing I've been wondering about. Nugget is in obediance training right now. Everyone said that I would be done in plenty of time for it not to interfer with her whelpping. The trainer, the vet (which we all know I'm not to thrilled with) as well as a friend of mine has said that it should be fine. She seems excited to go and likes being around everyone. It doesn't seem to be in anyway stressful for her, but it is excitable.

She is vomiting??
By dede1001

yes she is vomiting once in awhile usally only in the morning. I would say in the last two weeks shes vomited 3 or 4 times. Three times just foam, but this morning she accually threw up.

Hi Kate and Dede,
My girls have always produced the white creamy discharge a couple of weeks after mating them.I have found that when this happens it's a good indication that they are pregnant.Unless the discharge is green and smelly I shouldn't worry about it.
My bitch had the same thing and she's doing really well.
Karen.

hello everyone, well we seem to be past the sickness, and white discharge. Nugget is plumping up to the point that you can now tell. Her tits are very pointed and errect. No question now. I hope this is not a sign that she will have a really big litter her first time. She came from a litter of 16 and the stud a litter of 15. This is however her 1st and only mating so hopefully she won't have to many. Shes only 4+ weeks along. I don't remember any of my other dogs having spread out so soon. I can really notice it when she lays on her back. Her mid section is a lot different then normal. She is eating good and drinking good, but she still seems sluggish. Not the playful dog she was before. She'll still play and all but she would rather sleep. I read a lot on taking her temp on another posting, I have never done that so I want the vet to show me first. I'm kind of scared about it though.
I've had a few people tell me that since I'm not going to have any other litters that I might want to buy a large childs swimming pool and shred news papers in it for her whelp in. I had never heard of that before. It would seem to me that being round like they are would not be very good. It would seem that it would be easy to lay against the edge and smother a baby pup have any of you ever used one?
Hi dede
how are things going Nugget must be about due! is she showing any signs yet?

Nugget is 55 days today and really not feeling well at all. She is so tired and hates going out to wee wee. We have a lot of stairs from the deck to the back yard. She use to take them in leaps and bounds but now it's one foot at a time. She has a clear discharge now and then, which the book of the bitch says is fine. The vet told me as soon as she has delivered her last pup to give her about 4 Tums (yes that's right people Tums) and then to give her a few each day after through her whole nursing stage. It sounds kind of funny to me.
I can tell that she is not feeling well. She is quite big and just got her milk in. Her eyes are a little watery, but I think it's the air borne allergies. They seem to have increased since she’s been mated. She is eating anything she can get her hands on beside her own dry dog food. She's on a high protein puppy chow. ( Per the vet again) She is so extremely tired. She doesn't even what to go on a walk. She's not acting sick, but she is acting depressed. Does she know that she is pregnant? It seems like maybe she doesn't like being fat. Anyway, I just keep praying that she'll go long enough to carry the pups full term. She is panting some, but not continuously. She wants to stay by me. Her stomach feels very tight to the touch. She can't reach her hind end any more so I cut the hair around her valva off as it was becoming matted from the discharge. The discharge is clear and there is no odor to it. I'm giving her a small amount of canned dog food now and then for a treat. Also in the book of the bitch is talks about having glocous water. I purhased some pedi light that you give babies for dehidryation, but where to I find glocous water (sorry my spelling sucks) I saw someone say just dilute honey in it. Is that the same? Well I'll keep in touch and thank you everyone for your concern. The last and final thing I'm worried about is if she has to many puppies and she won't be able have room for contractions. I guess I'm reading to much. I shouldn't borrow trouble.
Thanks Dede
