Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Grooming equipment

Hi again every body. thanks for your help with my previous problem. I now have a new one!. Can anyone tell me where I can get proper grooming equipment? All my local pet shops have brushes and combs , the online shops have the same, but I need some grooming equipment for getting a cocker spaniel ready to show her. Also , where can I get hold of a trolley, with a rubber mat on for grooming?

Many thanks

Sheri

Sheri

hope you've got some money to hand - trolley tables are very expensive.

try these links: Oakenshaw and Allbrooks and HUB International

If you can wait, it's worth getting one from the next champs show you go to. You can see what they are like and save a few bob too.

Alternatively, it could be worth advertising for one that someone no longer needs/wants.

Hi Sheri

I agree with Pam - unless money is no object, then I would hold off on getting a trolley table for a while :-) Your basic grooming kit for a show Cocker should include a good quality slicker brush, a fine toothed comb (the Spratts no 76 usually called the "Spaniel Comb" is ideal), a wide toothed comb, a good quality pair of straight-edge scissors & a good quality pair of thinning scissors (either one side serrated or both sides serrated - I prefer those with one side serrated) Good makes of thinning scissors are Gotta & Roseline - you can get these from various companies including those Pam mentioned I think. I usually order mine from Simpsons - they can send you a catalogue of all their products on request. Another good company is Diamond Edge - they don't have a website so you need to telephone them on 01273 605922 if you want them to send you a catalogue

Best Wishes

Jane

Hello,

I've been very impressed with the grooming knowledge shown on this board. I ordered a catalogue from Simpsons on the strength of reading these postings. I have a Mini Schnauzer puppy and am about to invest in an electric trimmer. Do any of the boards' members have experience of trimming a mini Schnauzer? Could anyone recommend a trimmer that they have got on well with. I'm currently thinking about an Oster model. Just wondered what preferences other groomers would have.

I did my training using Osters but I bought an Andis clipper and they do not vibrate as much (although you may prefer a more vibrating model!). They seem to run cooler than other clippers. Do you intend to show your schnauzer? I would say that the only blade you need for your clipping is a number 10 which comes with the Andis clipper anyway (they cost about £20). Have a word with your pups breeder if they are close enough ask them to give you a grooming demonstration for you.

I find Osters get very hot and chose Double K Cabledrive clippers instead which will run all day and are much more powerful (I find anyway). They are expensive but well worth it - available from Petcetera in Hull. They have a website too. Also try Simpsons or KG Products for your other bits and pieces. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. I'll take a second look at the Simpsons catalogue I ordered and will decide. I am hoping to show my Mini Schnauzer. I am getting some valuable help with his grooming, but just thought I'd get a few additional opinions as well, as an electric trimmer can be an expensive piece of equipment. It's nice to try and find out the pros and cons before you buy. Thanks again.

If you intend showing then you will need a hand stripping knife of some description as they are stripped and not clipped for the show ring (although I believe their head, ears and throat may be clipped but you'll have to find that out from someone who shows them)!

Yes, their coats are mainly stripped and I have purchased a couple of Mikki stripping knives for this purpose. Their leg furnishings and feet are scissor trimmed, as well as their eyebrows and beard and edges of their ears. Some of their neck and head can be trimmed using an electric trimmer. I've been shown how to do this but haven't had the courage to attempt it myself yet (plus the fact i yet have to purchase an electric trimmer). I sort of know the theory but have to put it into practice which is always the hardest part.
