This has to be the most horrible thing when you have puppies - WORMS !
I would like to ask what are your preferences for puppy wormers ? I have a litter and after their first worming using Drontal Puppy Wormer they passed worms (yeuk) and thankfully all the worms were dead, but they continued to pass dead worms for 4 days after the worming took place. Is this normal ? Does Drontal still work for a few days after it has been admistrated, hence the worms being passed for the few days ? And when I worm in 2 weeks time should I expect to see even more of the dreaded little things ? Sorry it's such a horrible subject but one of the many we have to face when rearing pups. One other thing as the mother is still feeding I cannot worm her, but when she stops which is very soon I will worm her - should I expect her to have them too ? Thanks for any help here.

Yes, expect the mother to have them too, she'll have re-infected herself cleaning the puppies.

I would keep worming the pups at 2 week intervals. One of my dog vet books recommends that the mother should also be wormed at the same time as the pups, but its best to be guided by your vet.

I have always wormed my bitches in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy using panacur. this stopes 98% of the worms being transmitted from mother to pups via placenta. I also use this on the pups at 3 and 7 weeks (instruct new owners to worm at 12 and monthlyto six months). I have never seen worms wever, but I am told this wormer disolves them, so you wouldn't see any.

I know that it does say on the Panacurt to worm pups at 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, 5 and 8 weeks, but I found this made my pups ill. Maybe because they had already been wormed via the dam in utero, and also as I am now onto several generations of wormed bitches when they were in dam, that they son't pass on much encysted larva to pups, so pups have inherited fewer worms, and react to too much worming..

I've always used Drontal however the last time I went to the vet he said there was no need to use a dual wormer and Endorid tablets would be fine and much cheaper in the long run.
I'll let u know on my May litter how it goes

I can only safely use a dual wormer - I know my dogs get tapeworm occasionally because they eat rabbit.

hi Brainless.

( Still can't get used to that) Anyway my Holly is now 42-43 days so 3 weeks left till puppies due. I have bought Panacur but still have not used it as still a little scared. Have you ever had any wormer related probs at all. Sounds like you have not but thought I would ask. I am just trying to decide what is best. Which is as you know always hard.

Hi Pam,

With maggie I wormed her daily from day 40 until day 65, which worked out the day after she whelped as she was a day over. I then did the pups at 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 7 weeks using the Panacur liquid. I didn't see any worms, as has previoulsy been said the panacur would dissolve them, and the pups were fine after each worming. I had no problems with maggie when she was being done daily, I was using the granules and she was eating okay so it just went in her food!

Thanks Grace,

Think I will do her as don't want worms plus like to extra careful as she is fed raw.

Pam, That was another reason I really wanted to do Maggie, (apart from the fact that the book tells you to!) because she is fed raw tripe twice a day, and although I worm all the adults every three months I didn't want to risk the puppies starting off with them!

With my first litter of pups I wormed the mother during pregnancy and I also wormed myself and the whole kitchen along with her !! It's great danes I have and you can imagine just how much of the liquid I had to give her, she would'nt take it in her food so I had to pour it in her mouth and pray she swallowed, (she could be a stubborn old cow when she wanted to be) she did but not before spraying me and the kitchen with it as well ! Glad to say I didn't have worms and puppies that time didn't have anyeither but I felt it was such a traumatic event for her and me I didn't want to put any other pregnant bitch through it again hence this time I didn't worm my bitch. Don't think I would do that again though. In future I will worm my pregnant bitch if only to stop me from having the heebie jeebies with the worms. I always give the new owners a card with all their puppies worming times and when they have to worm him/her next. I always tell them better safe than sorry and just because they don't see any doesn't mean they are not there. And the good news is today has been a worm passing free day (yippee) just hope I've killed off all the little beggars (don't think your allowed to swear on this board !!) Puppies are all doing fantastic and show no ill effects from having had them................long may it continue and tonight might just be my first night's sleep in my bed in 4 weeks, wait to you see I will have nightmares all night about you know what !!!!
