Can anybody tell me is it normal for a bitch to carry on looseing 9 days after she was mated. Her vulva has gone slightly smaller and her teats slightly bigger, her discharge when mated was a light pink but has now gone to a normal blood colour. The dogs tied and every thing seemed to go ok, is this normal

It may not be 'normal', but it's what my bitches did too, and they went on to have fine litters each time. :)

I think it's absolutely amazing that I should find this subject here today. I too have spent this afternoon worrying, as my bitch was mated 7 days ago on day 12 of her season. Today I noticed that her discharge has returned to blood. Iv'e Emailed my breeder but not yet had a reply. I feel rather reassured now, thankyou.

Hello Doreen, my bitch is now on day 22 since the start of her season and seems all dried up now, as I would normally expect. I suppose we now just wait and hope for the best. Mine is an American Cocker Spaniel, first litter for both of us. Oh what have we got into here then, I imagine we're now on the trail of one worry after another. Never mind, as long as there's a happy ending ehh. What is your breed?

Hi Doreen, this morning I checked Lily to find she now has a creamy white discharge. So I got all concerned again, I rang the Vet for an appointment. Then I rang Lily's breeder and he reassured me that all was probably well as the discharge isn't mucky or smelly. In fact he says it's probably a good sign. I've cancelled the Vet but I'll watch her like a hawk. I'm going to be a nervous wreck by the end of May at this rate. I'm sure worse is still to come.
I'm up in Mid Northumberland near Bedlington where the terriers come from.

You can relax Nursey :) A creamy white/opaque discharge is a sign of pregnancy :)

Thanks for that reassurance Maid Marion, I had worried that the dog and bitch had passed an infection between them,or that it was a early pyometra. However since speaking to a few people with experience and being reassured, I have now rationalised, that of course it must be hormonal influences at work. Lily is very much her normal self, not poorly at all, in fact she's oblivious to the whole thing. What would we do without Champdogs!!! Thanks. Now relaxed...........for the time being!

Hi

I came across this when doing a Google search but felt compelled to add some information. Our bitch bled after mating for several days and seemed perfectly normal until last week - 3 weeks after mating. She went off her food (only slightly) and I noticed a white discharge. I took her our vet and he took a swab and blood test and put her on antibiotics straight away. Interestingly, she had no temperature. We have just had the results back and she has a profuse e-coli infection which may have affected the pregnancy. Whilst I don't want to alarm anyone, I think it is important to get veterinary advice if you notice a discharge. Hope all has been OK, as I say, I don't want to worry you, but after my experience, my unprofessional advice is that anyone with a bitch with these symptoms should get a professional opinion.

Hi Sue, I fully agree that if an owner is worried then they should go to the vet, I was happy to take the advice of my bitch's breeder on this occasion. Apart from the fact he is very experienced, I knew my bitch was not showing any signs of illness in any way, and if that had changed I'd have been off to the vet ASAP. In the event, my girl Lily has had her litter 4 days ago, and I also know Doreen's bitch Bonnie has too, neither having any problems at all. I must say again though you are right to advise caution.

Hi - I too had the same problem - 1 week after mating my bitch's discharge turned to blood. I rang the vet who told me to take her down. He took her temp (which I could have done at home) and told me it was normal for a bitch to have a lengthened discharge after mating and charged me £18 for the priviledge. I won't worry next time!!
