Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / housetraining an IG

I have a 8month old Italian Greyhound (IG) that we are trying to house break.
I have read that they can be hard to housetrain. The IG that we have gotten
was owned by another couple that worked long hours so the dog was crated during those times. The dog did start to mess in it's crate. The way I am going about training is to start as if the dog came to me as a pup with no training at all.
I heard about litterbox training IG's. Am I better to try that due to I live in upstate NY. Any suggestions would be great due to the fact I have a little girl that is madly in love with the dog!!!!
Thank You Maria

hi maria,
some toy breeds take longer to house train, and they will use there crates as toilet areas as well, if you are at home most of the day is to take the dog outside every couple of hours wait until the dog has been to toilet, give it lots of praise then bring the dog in, be patient, hopefully the dog will assosiate outside with going to the toilet, keep to the same traing method whatever you decide to do as by chopping and changing will only confuse the dog, regards tina
