Hi
I have a german wire-haired pointer who is four yrs old and male. He has been castrated and my problem is that new neighbours moved in and they have a cat my dog is now obsessed with trying to get to this cat, we haven even put extra fencing up to trey and deter him jumping it. Today the cat was on next doors windowsill inside and he still tried to jump the fence. Also just lately he's become aggressive towards other dogs can anybody make any suggestions or why he has become like this.
P.S We actually have a cat of our own.

I don't own a cat, but I understand from those who do own a cat and a dog, that the dog will often accept the family cat, but still won't tolerate other cats

Regarding the aggression, was he castrated recently or some time ago?
From what you have said, there seems to be no obvious reason for it (ie no recent fights with a male dog which may have got him defensive) so I would suggest a visit to the vet, as any fairly sudden change of behaviour in a dog which cannnot be explained may be some sort of health problem.

best wishes
Lindsay

I am in the same boat as you after a long time in labs i have recently got a GWP I do find him difficult at times I have trained him from the word go but where the cat is concerned Im not doing very well at all :( he is totally obsessed with her and her life is getting pretty miserable, I am dreading him seeing a Cat outside but I am firmly trying to show him that the cat must not be touched. you must act now or the cat will not be safe. Also I have started to use a whistle and he is responding really well here is a bit of advice have had from good sources.
Firstly that as they were used/bred for killing feral cats after the War it is instilled in their breeding so cats will always be a target.
You will have to come down very hard on him when he even looks at the cat teach him the Cat is a no go area.
GWP are very clever intelligent dogs and they are stubborn too so you have to be one step ahead at all times.
I do hope a more knowledgable GWP person posts to you as I said its new to me to you need to get advice from a fellow owner as they are complex breed and certainly keep you on your toes. :)
