Hope someone can help! My 1 year old golden retreiver is very hyper very active but just will not eat. I have tried everything so far. Tinned food dry foods he likes meat and chicken and fish. Ive tried being tough and letter him starve himself but after 4 days I worry and give in again. Should I just feed him what he wants or get tougher? How long is it safe for him not to eat anything.

Please help, he's worrying me jan mac

Hi, dont know if I have the answer, but thought I would reply as no-one else has!! If I had tried evrything and couldn't bear to starve any longer I would probably feed cooked chicken and rice. Debone carefully once cooked and whizz in the processor and add to the rice with a little of the broth. This is so he cant pick out the its of chicken and has to eat it all if he wants the chicken. For a day or two offer him 2 small meals til he clears it up and then gradually increase the amounts until he is eating the volume of food he should be. Feed about the 25% chicken 75% rice and add a comprehensive vit/min additive. If the vit add. that you use does not contain the B vitamins give Vetzyme as well, as this may help his hyper-activity. Most dogs adore chicken and rice but me may not go back onto "ordinary food" after it, but I would be surprised if he doesn't eat it. The only other thing I can suggest is to look into a BARF diet- loads if info on this site and on the web.
