Topic Dog Boards / General / what if bitch is kc reg and sire isn't??
- By Julie Kelly [gb] Date 26.03.03 11:49 UTC
Just out of curiosity, if you know that a bitch is kc registered and the sire is a pure bred, but not kc registered, what implications does this have on any pups, I am asking as my mum' bitch is kc and she has been approached about using her with an un reg dog, but it has had relevant health checks, as has my mum's dog, what would this make any future pups?????can they be registered or not
Thanks

Hi Julie,

No, pups cannot be registered if either or both parents are not KC registered. If your Mum's dog has had all the relevant tests (what breed is she?) and if your Mum is prepared to go through the hard work, possible heartache and possible huge cost of having a litter, no sense in using anything but the best really.

WOW, quick repsonse, thanks, that's what we suspected and she really isn't sure if she wants to breed from her or not, oh she has a Lab by the way, and yes i agree if you are going to do it, do it properly, it was more hyperthecial than anything, wasn't sure if both needed to be registered or if it was ok if it was just the mum

Hi again Julie,

Other point to consider is that if the dog is not registered with the KC in some way (breed or Active register), then he has not had all the relevant tests. Labs should be hip scored, which can only be done by a vet and with evauation by the KC/BVA panel, for which they need registration - vets can be very wrong on their evaluation of hip x-rays. If your Mum's dog hasn't had this done, then she would need this too - and goes without saying that the score should be good for both parents, rather than just having a score! Both parents should also have clear eye certificates, I believe.

If your Mum wants more info prior to deciding whether she wants to have a litter, I'm sure we'll all be pleased to help.

I am actually going to get my mum to register on ChampDogs, it's such a mind of infomation, i think if she will this will be the year to do it in, her dog is 3 1/2 yrs old and is super in every way, i'm quite sure she had all her checks done at roughly 18mths old if i remember rightly, and everything was good then, and she is well use to being hands on with little ones, she's a farmer and she has raised litters before, but jack russells, so anyway thanks for tips.

I would get your mum to consider why she is going to breed her bitch as there are many unwanted Labs waiting in rescue. If it is for money then I would not consider that a good reason, just my opinion. I bred my first Lab Mars as I wanted a pup to keep from her (Min) and then I had various friends who wanted a pup as well otherwise I would not have considered doing it. There is a chap down the road that has just got a chocolate bitch pup and has purely got her to breed for the money aspect. It makes me so mad that people consider doing this as I am sure there are people like me who feel the same way.

Hi Lucy
The reason to breed certainly would not be for the money, as she knows there is actually very little to be made out it anyway, no it would be to have a pup or 2 to keep and then home the rest, as she is in the farming community, getting a good gundog is important to these people, and enquiries have been made as to whether my mum was going to breed hers anytime in the future and someone suggested his dog to put to my mums, but he is not KC reg, that was why i really started this thread, because my mum was unsure whether the pups could be registered or not, but i think she would and will go for a good stud, who is registered and health checked etc..that is if she decides to breed

Is your mum's bitch a working dog or from a working line ?

Hi Lucy
She is both, she is a working dog, all be it, mainly jack russells killing rats and she retreives them, and she is from a working line....but predominately she is a pet.

the unregistered dog is unlikely to of had its health checks, as you needs your kc papers to have them  , so id think twice, also why would anyone be touting an unregistered male-theres plent of well bred , heath checked kc reg ones around,!!!and it costs as much to rear a good litter as it will a pet one,

It won't have been able to have the Health checks like Hip scoring and eye testing without being registered, as the deatails are recorded against a dogs registration records!

The pups from such a union could not be registered either, and you have nothing to verify the dogs ancestry.
