Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I want to know if you can breed a bitch at 1 year old if she has had her 2nd season then, as according to most books I have read about breeding dogs says the second season is the best time to mate a bitch is this true??

Yes, you can. But let me ask you - would you want to have a baby at say...10 years old? At a year old she is still a baby herself... I'd say 2 was the youngest...ideally 2 and a half... but more will be along with more experience soon I am sure.

HI
as far as i am concerned i would not dream of breeding my bitch untill she was at least two years old and had fully developed. and had the relevant checks.

Oh right I see, I was confused some sources say 1 years old others say 2 years is the best time to breed. Apart from the vets where else would you have to go for things like testing your dog for defects etc would this be done at vets??

Thanks for your advice, really appreciate it, as I'm starting out on breeding I need all the help I can get :)

If I were you I would talk to your breed club. Call the Kennel Club, they will tell you who to contact.
Your breed club is the best place to start - you should also go back to your girls breeder.

Does she have any health check certificates?

Hi
Irrespective of what it says about the second season it's not good breeding practise to mate a female before she is two, and you won't find any reputable breeders doing this, I'd wait if I was you.As when you come to sell the pups people won't be impressed with such a young mum either.

I usually mate my bitches on there second or third season but having said that by the time they have had there second season they are always at least 20 months old and again it depends on the indervidual bitch ,the last bitch we served was three and a half before we considered her ready to be a mum I would wait until she is at least twenty months so she is nearly two when she whelps and only then if she is mature both physically and mentally

What day of my dog's cycle would u say would b the best time to breed her?

well definetly not any day this cycle!
Do some more research about the breed first like the people above mentioned. I think the most important thing to do is go back to the breeder of your dog. If this isn't possible than you have to ask yourself "why not" is your dog from a pet shop? Is it from a puppymill? Is your dog from a back yard breeder? Is your dog even registerd with KC? Or are you breeding her without her breeders permission? The reason for the question is you want to start with good stock. If you're going to start breeding, start the right way, cause believe me cutting corners will only cost you money and give you BIG headaches in the future. Just trying to be helpful and honest, I'm not trying to discourage you just trying to set you down a good path like the others.
