My English Springer (Sophie) is now 16.
For the last 2 years she has suffered from incontinence which has been treated with varying degrees of success from the vet.
For the last 6 months she has frequently been defacting at night. The problem is worse because she wont go to sleep at night and consequently walks up and down thro her faeces.
She cries from about 3am most mornings.
She sleeps soundly during the day.
We cannot talk her for walks because her back legs are very weak now and she falls over every few yards.
Help would be appreciated.
Wal.

Oh Wal, I'm so sorry that you and Sophie are having such a difficult time. I'm afraid I feel I must say something that you will not want to hear. I't sounds to me, from what you say, that all dignity and pleasure has gone from Sophie's life. Try to imagine how distressed Sophie feels when she has messed up the house . If she cannot go for even a little toddle, where is the pleasure in life. At 16 years old you must have cared for her very well indeed. So think of releasing her from this misery. You will feel dreadful, sad and miserable, but wouldn't you rather suffer than Sophie.Perhaps Iv'e been no help at all, perhaps Iv'e only made you feel worse. If thats the case then I'm so sorry, but I feel that my dogs will be spared suffering at all costs.
Thinking of you.

I know it is hard but I have to agree with the other reply. At least with animals we have a choice in that we don't have to watch them suffer. She doesn't sound too happy . Having said that I know if I were in your shoes I would find that decision extremely hard. I think maybe its worth a visit to the vet to see what they advise. She has at least had someone who has loved her for sixteen years. You have obviously made her happy. It is something we all dread. Sorry I can't be of much real help.
