Had my boxer puppy whose 24weeks at the vets as her eye was rather runny, not swollen,or red,he said she had a blocked tear duck and the only way to clear it was to flush it out under anesthetic, but he said it was not necessary to leave her just put vasaline on the wet patch is this right ??are there anything else i can do??

Blocked tear ducts are very serious because they can lead to a condition that we laypeople call 'dry eye' and eye ulcerations. I have intimate knowledge of blocked tear ducts. In some cases the flushing will clear out the foreign matter in the tear duct. In other, much more serious cases, surgery to transpose the salivary gland to the tear duct is necessary. And in the most grievious of cases, it becomes necessary to remove the eye. Having been from stage one to the final stage on a GSP, if the dog were mine, I would go directly to an eye specialist and have them examine the dog as soon as possible.

Normally a 'blocked tear duct' will prevent tears from being exuded to keep the eye wet, so I'm not really sure how it relates to a 'runny' eye.

I wish you all the best and if you'd like to email please do.

It is probably not the tear producing ducts that are blocked but the ones that allow the tears to drain away. This would result in runny eyes. I myself have a blocked 'drain' in one of my eyes which can result in a very runny eye. They do resolve this by flushing fluid through the 'drain' to hopefully clear the blockage.

My daughter (not dog) was born with blocked tear ducts. She could not drain the tears that keep the eyes moist and always looked like she was crying. We were told to massage the duct and hope that they would open naturally. When, at 18 mo., they hadn't opened we had to book her in for surgery. She had both ducts opened with a metal probe. This was done under a general anesthetic as if she had moved during the procedure she could have torn or pierced the duct. I then had to administer an eye ointment for two weeks. No problems since then. I know this is a human we're talking about, but perhaps the solution is similar for dogs too.
