our dog is friendly with other dogs or would it be better to wait for a bitch, also the dogs breeder wants to use him occasionaly as a stud dog, (he is free to us), is this normal practise? can you forsee any problems with this situation? many thanks

Hi Jackdaw,
Have you introduced the two dogs to each other? If they get on okay on neutral territory, then try them in your home, which is where any problems would arise. If you do decide to take him on, agree to a month's trial period first, to see how it works after the initial settling-in period, once the entire dog starts to become a bit more assertive - this is when your existing dog could get tetchy.

Hope this helps :)

Mmmmm this might work out ok, IF you are prepared for the fact that your existing dog might end up the underdog, with the newcomer not only being entire, but sexually active as well. If that doesnt pose a problem for you, or more importantly your dog, then it could be great, but if your dog doesnt like 'bossy' dogs, then you might have problems.

Hi,
Personally I would never take on a dog under thes circumstances!
The breeder obviously wants to retain the use of the dog when it suits, without having to take care of it!

Do remember that males used even occaisionally for stud can become overinterested in all dogs and also begin territorial scent marking in your home, garden and most anywhere you take him. And it will be your home he will be urinating in, not theirs!!!!!

Over the years I have come accross many owners that used their male even occaisionally as a stud and problems often ensued.
