Topic Dog Boards / General / What are they?

Okay ..a question for you all ...I think that every dog I have ever owned has had them ..and Hudson has about 4 ....and I don't know what they are ;)

Those hairy lumps on the face ...you know the ones I mean? Usually under the chin or at the side of their heads somewhere he has a lump that has a few whiskers growing out of it. Does ANYONE know what they are?

Melody :)

Giving NO prizes for anyone who answers: Hairy lumps :D

Admin is the right!! - they are there for the whiskers to grow out of - the whiskers are there to let dogs know if they can actually get through things - they apparently grow as wide and deep as the dog (lying flat) so for example, a dachshund that is supposed to follow badgers into burrows would know if it could go any further by whehter their whiskers were touching the walls of the burrow etc.

But the whiskers on a dog never grow that long

I could be wrong, but that's what I was told growing up with dachsies. They are the width/height of the widest part of the body when scrunched (the best way I can describe it.

Wendy , I can believe that for a dachsie , but Hudson is a Malamute ;) He would need whiskers of about 4 inches long either side :D

You haven't seen Chewi's whiskers then Melody:) He has quite a lot of whiskers, with a couple nearly 5 inches long on each side. No wonder he is able to worm his head and body into spaces I wouldn't have thought possible;)

I just took a tapemeasure to Beattie's whiskers....they are 1 1/2 cm long. Including them, the width of her muzzle is just under 4 inches.....her ribcage is 8 inches across. There has to be another explanation!
