Our lab ate part of a beef bone two days ago, and now he has the runs (pretty bad, but they seem to be improving). There is little chunks of bone in his stool when he goes. I'd take him to the vet just to be safe, but our vet is on vacation and I really don't want to go to someone new. He seems fine otherwise, except hungry because we haven't fed him since last night -- I've heard I should restrict his food for 24 hours if he has the runs. Any suggestions? Is this just something he needs to pass? He's not vomiting or acting listless at all. Please help!

he sounds ok to me...i personally wouldn't worry, mine have beef shins daily. it s a personnal decision though & only you can decide for peace of mind.

Have any of them ever passed chunks of bone? We've only given it to him a few times before, but this time he actually ate the bone -- usually he just gnaws on it.

well mine only have raw bones, but yes they do pass bits of bone. As long as the dog is well & no signs of being uncomfortable, distended, listless then I would think he will be ok, just keep a close eye on him.

Was the bone cooked or raw? If it was cooked then it may have splintered and could have damaged his intenstine, check for dark coloured blood in his motions, if it is bright red then he may just have cut his anus with the bone. If the bone was raw then it should be ok, people seem to forget that dogs are carnivors and it would be doubtful if they could build a fire and cook their meat, let alone go to Tesco for pre cooked rubbish!

The bone wasn't raw, it was cooked. He seems to have passed it all -- we didn't feed him for almost 24 hours, and then gave him one cup of his presciption bland food. So far, so good.
